Registered Nurse (Cardio Thoracic Unit)
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 26 weeks
Unit Overview
- Department: Cardio Thoracic
- Unit Size: 70 beds
- Common Patient Diagnoses: Myocardial Infarction (MI), Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Atrial Fibrillation (A fib), COPD, pacemaker/AICD placement, lung surgeries including esophagectomy (not fresh from PACU), general medical overflow
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 1:4-5
- Nights: 1:5-6
- Patient Care Tech Ratios:
- Days: 1:8-9
- Evenings: 1:9-10
- Nights: 1:10-12
Shift Details
- Shift Length: 12 hours
- Night Shift Hours: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday for nights)
- Holiday Rotation Required (includes major holidays and eves)
- No current call or standby requirement
- Floating: Required to float to other general medical units
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or proof of application initiation
- BLS certification (AHA) required; ACLS recommended
- Experience with EKG interpretation and medication titration (especially Cardizem and heparin drips)
- Ability to titrate drips as part of nursing duties
- Basic nursing skills appropriate for critical care patients
- Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips (Phillips monitors used)
- Negative drug screen required (drug-free campus policy)
Orientation & Dress Code
- Orientation: Typically one shift or part of a shift, depending on prior experience at the facility
- Scrub Color: Any color except children/cartoon prints (adult unit)
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Orientation hours (12 hours) are non-billable and guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation
- Charge nurse coverage 24/7; charge nurses rarely take patient assignments
- House supervisor available 24/7
- Respiratory equipment involvement limited to troubleshooting; CPAP/BiPAP only if part of patient’s home regimen; heated high flow used only in special COVID cases
This position is ideal for RNs with critical care experience in cardiothoracic settings who are comfortable with telemetry, medication titration, and managing complex cardiopulmonary patients on night shifts.
