Unit Details
- Department: Neuro Med-Surg Acute
- Unit size: 54 beds (2 semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Shift length: 12-hour shifts (Nights)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday (every other)
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: Rotates with general unit staff; limited to skills competent for the assigned unit if floated outside general unit
Patient Population & Care
- Common diagnoses: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- RNs required to titrate drips, including heparin drip based on PTT (heparin drip experience required)
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Prior travel experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Experience working on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only
- Telemetry: House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors; nurses do not read strips themselves
- Charge nurse present 24/7, generally does not take patient assignment unless short staffed
- House supervisor present 24/7
- Nurse aides/patient care techs present with ratios:
- Days and evenings: 1:9-10
- Nights: 1:10-12
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application process has been initiated
- BLS (AHA) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Must produce a negative drug screen (drug-free campus policy)
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 days (includes computer training, unit education, and precepted patient care)
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
Work Environment & Policies
- Scrub color: No specific requirement
- Tattoos must be covered while on duty
- Piercings allowed only in ears
- Local clinicians within 50 miles subject to local placement policy
