Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - Medical Surgical (MedSurg) Floor 6

Location: Boise, Idaho


Position Details

  • Unit: Medical Surgical - Floor 6
  • Number of Beds: 35
  • Shift: 12-hour shifts (7 PM - 7 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (may be more frequent if needed)
  • Holiday Requirement: Will fill in if needed
  • Call/Standby: None
  • Floating: Required to float to like units within local hospitals (Meridian Medical Center and Nampa Medical Center). Travelers are first to float. MedSurg floats to MedSurg units when needed. Not very common.

Patient Care & Unit Information

  • Nurse to Patient Ratio: 1:4-5 (based on patient acuity using an acuity tool)
  • CNA Ratio: 1:8-10
  • Common Patient Diagnoses/Types:
    • Bariatric Surgery (Center of Excellence)
    • Urology (TURP, cystoscopy, prostatectomy, continuous bladder irrigations)
    • Colorectal Surgery
    • Vascular Surgery (AAA repair, endarterectomy, fempop bypass)
    • Acute Care Surgery
    • Gynecological Surgery (mainly hysterectomies)
    • Plastic Surgery/Breast Reconstruction (mastectomies)
    • Cystic Fibrosis and medical patients
    • Additional specialty surgeries: Whipple Surgery, Pectus Surgery
  • Specialty: Surgery-focused with shared medical patients (no dedicated medical unit)

Required Experience & Skills

  • Years of MedSurg Experience: Minimum 2 years (more preferred)
  • Skills:
    • Proficient with central lines, NG tube management, ostomies, drain management
    • Professional communication skills
    • Experience with continuous bladder irrigations (CBIs) and Foley catheter management preferred
  • Drip Management: RNs are not required to titrate drips; common drips include heparin
  • Charge Nurse: Present on each shift without patient assignment; travelers may serve as charge nurse if experienced

Certifications & Orientation

  • Required Certification: BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Orientation:
    • 1 shift unit-specific orientation following hospital orientation
    • 1 didactic day with educator to review unit specifics

Equipment & Monitoring

  • Respiratory Equipment: CPAP, high flow oxygen, occasional BiPAP (patients on BiPAP transferred to higher level of care)
  • Monitoring: Remote telemetry monitoring; RNs must be able to interpret cardiac strips

Dress Code

  • No specific scrub color required; must be clean and professional

Contract Length

  • Approximately 13 weeks

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required

L&D Unit is Traveler friendly for CST roll as well as RN roll. Work load is very manageable. Great staff support.
