Registered Nurse (RN) – ER Float / Med-Surg

Location: Wahoo, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Overview

• Work primarily on a med/surg floor caring for acutely ill patients and patients in swing beds.
• Float to the ER as needed; ER experience and certifications are a plus.
• Typical nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2-3 depending on census.
• No OB services.
• MD on call at night for hospital and ED.
• Must have strong critical thinking skills and be a team player.
• Supportive staff and community environment.

Schedule & Shifts

• Shifts: 7a-7p and 7p-7a.
• Schedule created by manager; block scheduling attempted but not guaranteed.
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (EOW).
• Holidays: Work one or two holidays during the holiday season as needed.

Required Certifications & Experience

• ACLS and BLS certification required.
• PALS and TNCC certifications preferred.
• Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required.
• Critical access hospital experience required.
• Prior travel experience preferred but not required.

Clinical & Operational Details

• EMR system: Healthland.
• Medication dispensing: Omnicell.
• IV pumps: Plum (no IV team).
• Cardiac monitors: Mindray; must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips (no monitor tech available).
• No ventilator management; stabilize and transfer patients requiring vents.
• Charge nurse role available only on day shift.
• Nurse aides support unit clerk duties during shifts.
• Respiratory therapy available 6:45am-4pm M-F; nursing staff manage treatments after hours and weekends, including BiPAP/CPAP setup (training provided if needed).
• Pharmacy hours: 7am-4:30pm M-F; remote pharmacy support after hours and weekends; nurses may need to mix medications after hours.
• Common patient diagnoses include farm accidents, orthopedic injuries, kidney stones, flu, and other rural ER cases.
• All ER nurses must be able to float to Med-Surg.
• Candidates who can read telemetry strips and manage drips are preferred.
• No visible tattoos or piercings allowed.

Additional Notes

• Hospitalist or intensivist coverage in-house; primary care physicians round on patients.
• Rotating physicians on call nights and weekends; ER physician not always in-house.
• Respiratory therapy not available 24/7; nursing covers treatments after hours.

Required Qualifications Summary

• Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Minimum 2 years nursing experience.
• ACLS and BLS certifications.
• Critical access hospital experience.
• Ability to float between ER and Med-Surg.
• Strong critical thinking and teamwork skills.
