Registered Nurse - ICU

Location: Oxnard, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

A hospital in California is seeking an experienced ICU nurse for a travel contract. The unit includes ICU and CCU with approximately 20 beds. Nurses will care for patients with neuro surgery cases (craniotomies, carotids, ventriculostomies, ICP monitoring), open heart surgery, post caths, impellas, and balloon pumps. No CRRT or ECMO cases.

Work Environment & Details

• Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:2, sometimes 1:1
• EMR system: Cerner (experience preferred)
• Charge nurse role available
• Nurse aides present during late afternoon shift (5-5:30pm) performing blood draws, EKGs, and tech duties
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend
• Holiday shifts: typically one major and one minor holiday per contract, coordinated with permanent staff
• Scrub color: Navy
• Tele/Monitor techs: Nurses read cardiac strips; no dedicated monitor tech
• Drips administered: vasoactive medications including vasopressors (levophed, norepinephrine), inotropes (dobutamine, dopamine), sedatives (propofol, fentanyl), etc.
• Ventilator management required
• Hospitalist or intensivist on call after hours
• Respiratory therapy available 24/7
• Pharmacy available 24/7
• Shifts: 12-hour shifts (7am-7:30pm or 7pm-7:30am), self-scheduling but not guaranteed
• Floating required to IMCU (stepdown) or Observation units
• Orientation: 3 shifts floor-specific orientation

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years ICU nursing experience (higher requirement overrides earlier mention of 2 years)
• Active California RN license
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required
• Experience with neuro or cardiac ICU patients preferred but general ICU experience is acceptable
• Cerner EMR experience preferred
• Travel nursing experience preferred but not required

Additional Notes

• Nurses must be able to manage drips, ventilators, and read cardiac strips independently
• No CRRT or ECMO experience required or expected
• Floating to other units is part of the role
• Weekend and holiday coverage required as part of rotation
