Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - Hematology/Oncology (Med/Tele Oncology)

Location: Jackson, Mississippi
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work at a Level 1 trauma center on the Hematology/Oncology unit (32 beds).
  • Unit typically has nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:5 to 1:6, adjusted for higher acuity patients.
  • Manage patients with hematology/oncology diagnoses, including chemotherapy administration (chemo certification NOT required; training provided).
  • Experience with lines, chest tubes, and comfort with hem/onc patients preferred.
  • EPIC charting experience is required.
  • Travel experience with contract extensions preferred but not required.
  • Must be comfortable titrating drips such as heparin; some cardiac drips may be involved.
  • Telemetry monitoring on all patients; RNs work with central monitors and read their own strips.
  • Charge nurses take light patient assignments and may take full loads if needed.
  • Respiratory therapy support available; CPAP/BiPAP at night, high flow on other units.
  • Floating required within skillset across med/surg units; higher acuity patients assigned to core staff.

Schedule & Work Environment

  • 12-hour shifts: 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am.
  • Weekend requirement: typically every other weekend or 2 weekends per month.
  • Holiday rotation with regular staff.
  • No call or standby requirements.
  • Block scheduling possible; travelers expected to fill scheduling gaps.
  • Dress code: solid color, professional scrubs (any color).
  • Orientation includes paperwork, system logins (Omnicell, Epic), unit tour, and 2 additional shifts with preceptor.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience on first job.
  • Minimum 1 year experience at a Level 1 trauma center or very large hospital.
  • BLS certification required; ACLS required for charge nurses.
  • EPIC charting experience required.
  • Flu vaccine required (medical exemption allowed with documentation).
  • Fingerprint background check required (remote or in-person options).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with hematology/oncology patients and chemotherapy administration.
  • Prior travel experience with contract extensions preferred but not mandatory.

Additional Notes

  • The unit is a Level 1 trauma center with high acuity patients.
  • Nurses float within med/surg units but higher acuity patients are assigned to core staff.
  • The position offers a great learning opportunity for chemo administration without prior certification.
