Job Opportunity: PICU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work on a mixed-acuity 24-bed unit with patient ratios:
- PICU: 1:2
- PCU: 1:3
- Acute care: 1:4
- PICU RNs expected to work across the acuity spectrum.
- May be placed on call for regularly scheduled shifts.
- All staff, including travelers, may be assigned as Rover nurses/task nurses on any inpatient unit, including NICU, Labor and Delivery, and adult acute care.
- Rover nurse duties include:
- Patient turning and repositioning
- Bathing
- Assistance with patient transport and ambulation
- Meal assistance
- Medication administration (within individual comfort zone and training)
- Scheduling:
- 4-week scheduling period (Monday through Sunday)
- Travelers do not self-schedule; scheduling is done by unit scheduler based on unit needs
- Requests for scheduling preferences (e.g., no 3 consecutive shifts) considered but not guaranteed
- Minimum weekend requirement:
- 3 weekend shifts plus one Friday day shift (day shift travelers) or one Sunday night shift (night shift travelers)
- Weekend shifts: Saturday and Sunday (day shift), Friday and Saturday (night shift)
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Nebraska
- Minimum 2 years of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) experience, including experience within the last year
- Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Valid Driver's License
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Shift Details
- Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (19:00 to 7:30)
- Total hours per week: 36
Facility & Work Environment
- 100% nicotine-free facility
- Scrubs are mandatory; specific color and branding required (information provided upon confirmation)
- Parking available via permit (~$55/month) or daily rate (~$3 for 20 hours)
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID required
- Background check within 30 days of start, including multi-county and nationwide checks
- SAM and OIG checks required within 30 days of start and every 30 days thereafter
- Education verification required
- State-specific abuse/neglect registry check required within 30 days of start
- Primary source verification of state license and NURSYS verification required
- Certifications required as applicable: ACLS, BLS, PALS, NRP, NIH Stroke Certification
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology testing as applicable
- Physical exam and fit mask test required within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Immunizations and health screenings required:
- Tdap within last 10 years
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray with TB questionnaire if positive history
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers (boosters if low/equivocal titers)
- Hepatitis B titer or declination
- 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (boosters if low/equivocal titers)
- Drug screen within 60 days of start, updated annually
- Flu vaccine preferred (documentation or declination required)
- COVID vaccine preferred; medical/religious exemptions accepted
- Annual skills checklist required
- Two professional references from work within past 2 years required
Additional Notes
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgement required
- Eye exam (Snellen) required only for OR staff (not applicable here)
- Locals not accepted; candidate must be more than 100 miles from facility
