Required Certifications

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only

• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure)
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
• State RN License (Permanent RN license required; temporary licenses not accepted)
• NURSYS Verification (for all RNs)
• NIH Stroke Certification (as applicable)
• Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement (HIPAA compliance)

Required Background Checks & Verifications

• Criminal background check within 60 days of start, including:

  • All states lived/worked in past 7 years
  • State of permanent residence
  • VA Statewide Repository Search

  • FACIS Level 3
  • Sex Offender Registry
  • Education Verification (degree from NLN or CCNE accredited program)
• EPLS/GSA/SAM check (within 30 days of start)

• Fingerprinting (Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check) required for certain units; results can pend if proof of submission is on file
• Virginia Central Registry (CPS) Search and Proof of Submission required for Pediatrics, NICU, Behavioral Health, and Labor & Delivery units

Health & Immunization Requirements

• Physical Exam (within 1 year, attesting ability to meet physical demands)
• Medical Fit Mask Test (within 1 year prior to start)
• Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine or declination
• Negative TB test or Chest X-Ray (Q-gold/T-spot within 30 days of start or two PPDs including one within 30 days)
• TB Questionnaire (updated annually)
• Measles (Rubeola) titers and boosters if low titer
• Mumps titers and boosters if low titer
• Rubella titers and boosters if low titer
• Hepatitis B titer, vaccine series, or declination
• Varicella titers and boosters if low titer
• Drug Testing (9-panel, within 30-60 days of start; instant drug screens not accepted)
• Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved exemption (required for all personnel during flu season)
• Latex Questionnaire (prior to start)
• Flu Vaccine Exemption Attestation (if applicable)

Competency & Skills Requirements

• Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (as applicable)
• Color Blind Testing (required)
• Competency Exam (required; Sonography or Vascular Tech exam accepted for those specialties)
• Abuse Reporting Competency (covering physical/sexual abuse, domestic violence, neglect/exploitation of elderly or incapacitated adults)
• Skills Checklist (updated annually)

Facility-Specific Information

• Orientation includes exams/tests such as Pharmacology Exam, Point of Care Testing, Airborne Precaution Mask Fitting (not pass/fail)
• Additional modules assigned during orientation via VCU Learning Exchange; approximately 6 hours to complete
• Candidates must bring mask (cloth acceptable), non-wireless headphones, and laptop or cell phone (notify if not available)
• Photo for badge required prior to document due date with specific photo guidelines (neutral background, no hats, clear eyes, etc.)
• Confidentiality Agreement required prior to start
