Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit (Travel/Contract)

Location: Glen Burnie, Maryland
Contract Length: 12 weeks
Start Date: May 11, 2026
Shift: Days, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (08:00 – 20:30)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Schedule Requirements:

  • Every other weekend required
  • Holidays as scheduled
  • Floating within specialty sister units and lower acuity units as needed
  • No pre-scheduled on-call shifts

Unit & Patient Population Details

  • Tele Stepdown unit with 27 beds, average census 26 patients
  • Patient age range: Adults and Geriatrics
  • Common diagnoses:
    • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
    • Gastrointestinal Bleeding
    • End Stage Renal Disease
    • Cardiac Dysrhythmias and electrolyte imbalances requiring cardiac monitoring
  • Patient care includes chronically ventilator-dependent patients and those receiving peritoneal dialysis
  • Special procedures: Peritoneal dialysis, bedside thoracentesis
  • Equipment used: Viking lift, sit-to-stand devices, EKG, Zoll defibrillator, vacuum dressings

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Maryland
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least some experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Negative 9-panel drug screen within 30 days prior to start (instant tests NOT accepted)
  • Fit test for respirator mask within 1 year of start, updated annually (3M 1860 preferred)
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (required for units working with children)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines/boosters required
    • Hepatitis B: Positive titer or declination (series not accepted)
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines/boosters required
  • TB screening: Negative QGOLD or TSPOT within 1 year, or 2-step PPD as applicable; must be updated annually
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for 2025-26 season
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required for this location; if required, medical/religious exemptions accepted

Orientation & Facility Requirements

  • Facility-specific documents and instructions will be provided prior to start, including:
    • First Day Instructions (FDI)
    • Welcome Letter
    • IT Access Forms (facility provides login info on first day)
    • Learning Modules to be completed before start (unpaid time)
    • Photo for badge (passport-style with solid white/beige background)
    • Vehicle Identification Form (time sensitive)
    • Pyxis Access Request Form (completed after learning modules)
    • Confidentiality Agreement and Dress Code review
    • Latex Allergy Questionnaire
    • Badge Application (must be completed within 72 hours of signing contract)
    • Portfolio Epic Training Test Out Form (if applicable)
  • No pre-scheduled on-call shifts required

  • Floating may be required within specialty sister units and lower acuity units
  • Scrub color: Dark blue
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required but first-time travelers will be screened for strong skills and experience
