Registered Nurse - Behavioral Health

Contract Length: 26 weeks

Job Description

• Work within a medium security correctional facility's mental health unit.
• Responsible for medication administration and management under psychiatric supervision.
• Typical shift: 5 days a week, 8-hour shifts (8:00 AM - 4:00 PM).
• Hours may vary to meet unit needs, including every other weekend and holidays.
• Must clear a state-run Criminal History Form before starting (can take up to 4 weeks).
• Required to submit proof of current nursing license, registration, background check, TB testing, and recent flu shot.
• Orientation includes facility-specific and Department of Corrections training.

Key Duties

• Receive verbal report from previous nurse on satellite unit.
• Process physician orders, update medication administration records (MARs), and verify with a second nurse.
• Administer medications to various patient populations including long-term care, infirmary, and general population incarcerated individuals.
• Document medications given and refused.
• Perform controlled substance and tool counts with a second nurse.
• Maintain medication stock accountability.
• Assess patients admitted to the satellite unit and document nursing progress notes.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York.
• Minimum of 1 year of psychiatric nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
