Shift: 12-hour Days (6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week (48 hours accepted upon request)
Unit: 44 beds, Day shift nurse-to-patient ratio 1:3-5

Job Description

• Work in an Ortho Neuro Trauma Care Center focusing on trauma, orthopedic (e.g., broken hip/femur), and neurological patients (scheduled neck/back, spine/rib fractures).
• Float within skillset primarily to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice; mid-shift float within the same campus possible.
• Weekend/Holiday Requirement: Work three weekends every six weeks and every other holiday.
• No on-call or call-back required.
• May be required to precept students and new hires in this teaching hospital environment.

Required Qualifications

• Active current compact RN license.
• Minimum 2 years RN experience, including:

  • At least 1 full year in ortho/neuro/trauma care.
  • Trauma Level II experience.
  • Completion of at least 1 prior travel assignment.
• Recent EPIC charting experience (checkoff class required).
• Certifications: AHA BLS and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
• Strong neuro assessment skills, including:

  • Log rolling patients.
  • Applying assistive devices (back brace, immobilizer).
  • Telemetry/12-lead EKG interpretation (travelers must pass a telemetry test; stepdown experience only).
  • Peripheral IV insertion.

Preferred Skills

• Chest tube and indwelling drain management.
• Management of drips (heparin, lasix, protonix).
• Epidural management.
• PEG/NG tube care.
• Buck’s traction and pin site care.
• On-Q pain management system.
• CIWA/BH protocols.
• Wound care including packing and wound vacs.
• Strong assessment, critical thinking, resilience, adaptability, and teamwork skills.

Additional Information

• No local candidates within a 40-mile radius will be considered.
• Scrub color: Navy blue; no competing health system or agency logos allowed.
• Attendance is critical; 3 call-ins may result in termination.
• COVID-19 vaccine is not currently required but subject to change.
• Guaranteed hours may not apply during orientation week or holidays when the unit is closed.
