Registered Nurse – Medical-Surgical
Location: Evansville, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour Nights (6:30 PM – 7:00 AM)
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week (48 hours accepted upon request)
Weekend/Holiday Requirement: Work three weekends every six weeks; every other holiday
Job Description
- Provide care in a surgical medical care center with a focus on post-surgical patients including Whipples, vascular cases, pre/post heart catheterizations, bariatric, ENT, podiatry, open abdominal wounds, dementia, altered mental status, CIWA/detox, thyroid surgeries, and fall risk patients.
- Skills required include PIV insertion, chest tube and indwelling drain management, continuous bladder irrigation (CBI), stable drips (heparin, lasix, protonix), epidural management, ostomy care, blood product administration, telemetry interpretation, wound care (packing, wound vacs, dressing changes), and pre/post heart cath care (femoral/TR bands, no interventions).
- Strong assessment and critical thinking skills are essential.
- Must be adaptable, resilient, and able to manage change well.
- May be required to precept students and new hires.
Float and Location Details
- Primary location is Midtown campus.
- Float within skillset required: first to float within the unit, including to nearby campuses approximately 8 to 11 miles away.
- Cross-campus float requires 2-hour notice; mid-shift cross-campus float is unlikely but possible.
- No on-call or call-back requirements.
Unit Information
- 41-bed unit.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: Days 1:5-6, Nights 1:6-7.
- Charge nurse takes a patient assignment.
- Positive unit culture with teamwork, supportive charge nurses, and experienced patient care technicians.
- Navy blue scrubs required; no competing health system or agency logos allowed.
- Teaching hospital environment.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of strong Medical-Surgical nursing experience.
- At least 1 prior travel assignment completed.
- Experience in a trauma level II setting.
- Recent EPIC charting experience required (checkoff class will be required).
- Current active compact nursing license.
- Current AHA BLS certification.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
Additional Information
- Overtime applies after 52 hours on 48-hour contracts.
- COVID-19 vaccine is not currently required but subject to change.
- GSA hours are not guaranteed during orientation week.
- No local candidates within a 40-mile radius will be considered.
