Registered Nurse (RN) – IMCU

Location: Kankakee, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Details

• Department: Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU)
• Beds: 22 private beds
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5 (days and nights)
• Shift: 5 PM – 5:30 AM
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
• Call/Standby: None
• Floating: Required to float to ICU (PCU level patients) or Med Surg (full assignment)
• Orientation: One 12-hour shift specific to the unit
• Scrub Color: Caribbean scrubs

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Cardiac conditions including open heart post-op day 3
• Cranial cases
• Cardiac catheterization (radial and femoral)
• COPD patients with Watchman and Zephyr valves
• Pacemakers, tracheostomies
• Continuous CPAP, BiPAP, chest tubes, continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
• No ventilator patients

Clinical Responsibilities

• RNs are required to titrate drips including:

  • Cardizem, amiodarone, nitroglycerin (for blood pressure only)
  • Insulin, heparin
  • Dopamine/dobutamine with renal dosing adjustments
• RNs read telemetry monitors; centralized telemetry tech support available
• Charge Nurse role:

  • Day shift: Team Lead, does not take patients
  • Nights/weekends/holidays: Charge nurse takes patients
• Nurse aides support with blood sugars, vitals, and ADLs (ratio 1:10)
• Respiratory therapy equipment used: CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)

Requirements/Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Illinois
• Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
• ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
• Experience with Epic electronic medical record system

This position is ideal for an RN with intermediate care experience who is comfortable managing cardiac and respiratory patients, titrating drips, and working in a fast-paced IMCU environment.
