Registered Nurse (Med Surg/Peds)

Location: Dickinson, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Unit Type: Medical-Surgical / Pediatrics
  • Beds: 17 total (14 inpatient, 3 observation)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • Days: 1:4
    • Nights: 1:5
  • Common Patient Diagnoses: Adults and Pediatrics with UTI, altered mental status, pneumonia, COPD
  • Pediatric Coverage: Pediatrician on call (not in-house); pediatric patients not managed by hospitalists
  • Respiratory Therapy Equipment: Occasional BiPAP managed primarily by RT; no ventilators on unit
  • Telemetry: ICU monitors telemetry; nurses apply telemetry leads and read strips
  • Charge Nurse: Present on each shift and takes patient assignments
  • Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs:
    • Days: 2 nurse aids per 15 patients
    • Nights: 1 nurse aid per shift

Schedule & Orientation

  • Shift: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm)
  • Scheduling: Self-scheduling available
  • Weekend Requirement: As needed
  • Holiday Requirement: None
  • Floating: May float to ED/ICU for 1:1 patient care as needed
  • Orientation: 1 unit-specific orientation shift (12 hours), or one night and one day if needed
  • Scrub Color: Navy blue (scrubs provided)

Clinical & Job Details

  • Drip Titration: RNs do not titrate drips
  • Common Drips: Electrolytes, hypertensive medications, diuretics (no titration of hypertensive/hypotensive meds; diuretics rarely continuous)
  • Fit Testing: Required; facial hair may prevent passing fit test and could result in contract cancellation
  • Documentation: Can be challenging; strong communication and teamwork skills are important
  • Attributes for Success: Communication, motivation, approachability, teamwork, and willingness to ask questions

Required Certifications & Qualifications

  • BLS Certification
  • PALS Certification
  • Registered Nurse license in good standing for Med Surg/Peds specialty

Additional Notes

  • No clinical involvement outside of nursing duties specified
  • Radius Rule: Must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any related healthcare facilities in the area
  • Return to Office (RTO): Required within 7 days of contract start; no extensions approved
