Job Opportunity: MedSurg 4N Neuro Nurse

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit & Patient Population

• Department: Med Surg Neuro - 4th Floor North
• Unit Beds: 25
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
• Patient Types: MedSurg/Tele patients including strokes, stable neurological deficits, post-neurosurgery, joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbations, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, failure to thrive
• No respiratory therapy equipment troubleshooting required

Certifications & Requirements

• Required: BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications
• RN's must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book exam during orientation (resources provided)
• Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
• Driver’s license required to verify distance eligibility (must be outside 50 miles radius from certain affiliated facilities)
• Preference for candidates with travel experience but strong candidates without will be considered
• No license or background issues allowed

Clinical Responsibilities

• RN titration of drips: Heparin, lidocaine, ketamine
• Common drips: PCA pumps
• Telemetry: Tele techs interpret strips; RNs should have tele awareness but are not required to read strips independently
• Charge Nurse: Present on each shift and takes patient assignments
• Nurse Aides/Patient Care Techs: Present with ratios approximately 1:10-20

Scheduling & Orientation

• Shifts: 0630-1900 (day), 1830-0700 (night)
• Scheduling: Travelers will be scheduled; limited block scheduling available
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: 2-3 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year’s
• Floating: Required to float to other MedSurg areas or units with MedSurg patients waiting for beds
• Orientation: 2 shifts of unit/department-specific orientation

• Scrub Color: Navy Blue for RNs
• Mechanical lifts available in every other room
• Emphasis on hourly rounding and responsiveness
• Unit typically experiences multiple discharges and admissions daily
• Successful nurses are those who manage workload efficiently, have good attendance, are team players, friendly, compassionate, and patient-focused
• Patient population includes diverse cultures such as Spanish, Karen, Burmese
• 12-hour night shifts available

This position is ideal for MedSurg nurses with neuro experience who thrive in a fast-paced, diverse environment and are comfortable with telemetry awareness and titratable drips.
