Registered Nurse – Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 48 hours per week
Unit Overview
- 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Patient population includes stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, and some medical overflow
- House supervisor and charge nurse present 24/7; charge nurse generally does not take patient assignments unless short-staffed
- Nurse aides/patient care techs support the unit with ratios around 1:9-12 depending on shift
- Telemetry monitors (Phillips brand) are used house-wide; nurses do not need to interpret strips
- Respiratory equipment includes high flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare)
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has started
- BLS (AHA) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Prior travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Experience with heparin titrated drips based on PTT required; RNs must titrate drips
Scheduling & Work Environment
- 12-hour night shifts
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday requirement: every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: participates in float rotation with general unit staff; if floated outside general unit, only assigned to skills they are competent in and paired with trained nurse
- Orientation: 2 days unit-specific orientation including computer training and precepted patient care
- Dress code: no specific scrub color required; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Drug-free campus policy with mandatory negative drug screen for all panels
- Orientation hours (12 hours) are non-billable and guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation
- Call-off policy allows 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or pay obligation
This position is ideal for experienced neuro med-surg RNs with prior travel experience seeking a night shift role in a busy neuroscience-focused acute care unit.
