Registered Nurse - PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit)

Location: Springfield, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking an experienced Pediatric ICU Registered Nurse for a night shift travel assignment. The role involves providing direct patient care in a 12-bed PICU unit with a focus on critically ill pediatric patients, including trauma, burn, neurosurgery, respiratory, sepsis, and oncology cases. Nurses may also float to NICU, pediatric medical floor, or pediatric emergency department based on patient volume.


Shift Details

  • Shift: Nights (18:30 - 07:00)
  • Weekly Hours: 36 guaranteed
  • Weekend hours as required
  • No call requirements
  • Night shift orientation occurs on day shift and requires availability for the full week

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license eligible or licensed in Missouri
  • Minimum 2 years of PICU experience (ventilator competency required)
  • At least 1 year post-orientation experience in PICU
  • Certifications: BLS, PALS (American Heart Association only), TNCC
  • Flu vaccination required (no declinations accepted) during flu season (Nov 1 - Apr 1)

Unit Information

  • Beds: 12
  • Patient Ratios: ICU status 2:1, Intubated 1:1, Pediatric status 3:1
  • EMR system: EPIC
  • Patient population includes trauma, burn, neurosurgery, pediatric surgery, respiratory, sepsis, endocrinology, chronic/trach, hematology/oncology, and orthopedic cases

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation)
  • Coordinate patient care with ancillary departments
  • Maintain patient rights and confidentiality
  • Demonstrate clinical expertise and effective communication skills
  • Work within the scope of nursing practice and state regulations
  • Physical demands include standing/walking most of the shift, lifting/pushing patients, and occasional kneeling or crouching

Additional Information

  • Nurses must be flexible and team-oriented
  • Dress code requires black scrubs; unprofessional attire such as jeans is not allowed
  • Float assignments may include NICU, PICU, pediatric medical floor, or pediatric ED depending on patient volume

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty Experience: Minimum 2 years in PICU with ventilator competency
  • Prior travel experience is not specified as required
