Job Summary: Surgical Services - Travel/Contract Position
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks

- Weekend Requirement: 1 full weekend within a 6-week call schedule
- On-Call Requirement: Approximately 110 calls
- National Certification Required: NBSTA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)
- BLS Certification: Required (AHA or RQI accepted)
- State License: Indiana RN license required (pending state license not accepted)
- Locals Accepted: Yes
- Holiday Work: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Shift Options:
- 8 and 10 hour shifts totaling 40 hours/week
- 3 shifts of 12 hours totaling 36 hours/week
- 4 shifts of 12 hours totaling 48 hours/week

Key Job Requirements & Skills
- Ability to receive pump lines from perfusion and prepare them for cannulation
- Must hold NBSTA certification before start
- Must be able to work weekends, on-call, and holidays as specified
- Must comply with IU Health policies regarding RN travel staff (Periop/OR RN travelers exempt from certain restrictions)
Certifications Required
- NBSTA (mandatory)
- BLS (AHA or RQI accepted)
- ACLS, PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM, NIH Stroke Certification as applicable per unit (verify with recruiter)
- State License verification within 30 days of start
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement (HIPAA)
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam
- Color Blind Testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent)
- Unit Competency Exam
Health & Compliance Documents
- Physical Exam within 12 months of start
- Fit Mask Test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
- Immunizations and Titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for flu season (9/30 - 3/31)
- Color Blind Exam (Ishihara or equivalent)
Background & History Requirements
- Background Check within 90 days of start including:
- 7 years residence/work history
- SSN Trace, County Criminal, Statewide, National Sex Offender, FACIS Level III
- Education Verification
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
- Transcript/Diploma (official copies required)
- Employment Application with full work history and explanation of gaps over 30 days
- Minimum 2 professional references from recent employment verified within 2 years (must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above)
- Skills Checklist within 12 months and annually
- Facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements (time sensitive)
Additional Notes
- Candidates must provide 2-3 days of interview availability
- IU Health has mandatory RRT modules for Respiratory Therapists (not applicable here but noted for awareness)
- On-site Fit Testing is a last resort and limited to certain campuses
- IU Health does not allow Indiana RNs to work at their facilities after 11/30/24 except for Periop/OR RN travelers and allied/ambulatory RN travelers
This position is ideal for experienced Surgical Services professionals with cardiovascular and transplant case experience, who hold NBSTA certification, and are comfortable with on-call, weekend, and holiday work schedules in a short-term acute care setting.
