Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Oncology Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (4 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical Oncology
- Patient Ratio: Approximately 1 nurse to 4-5 patients
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Floating: May float within scope to meet facility needs
- Orientation: Virtual orientation on Friday, onsite reporting Monday

Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut
- Minimum 2 years of oncology nursing experience, with oncology experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Certifications (may be required depending on unit)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – AHA or ARC
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – AHA or ARC (not required for Pediatric Stepdown)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – Required for NICU only
- Chemotherapy Certification – Required if working in Oncology unit (ONS certification preferred; Pediatric Oncology requires APHON)
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) – Required for ER; preferred for Pediatric ER
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) – Check unit requirements
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) – Required for Psychiatry/Behavioral Health; preferred for ER RNs
- NIH Stroke Certification – Required for most RNs except Behavioral Health, Case Management, Home Health, OR, Pediatric units, NICU, Labor and Delivery
- Other certifications as per unit requirements
Competency Exams
- Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam (minimum 85% to pass)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for Telemetry, Med Surg Tele, ER, ICU, Progressive Care, Stepdown, PACU, Cath Lab, Labor and Delivery units (not required for NICU, Psych, Pediatric, Ambulatory)
- Color Blind Testing (minimum 80% to pass) required for all candidates starting on/after 8/2/2024
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 12 months of start (including SSN trace, counties lived/worked, national sex offender, federal checks)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
- Education verification including foreign equivalency evaluation if applicable
- Verification of highest level of education required
- Sex offender search required
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months of start and updated annually (clean shaven required for fit testing)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation required
- Annual TB questionnaire required
- Immunizations/vaccinations:
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) – positive titer or 2 vaccines required; boosters may be required for low titers
- Varicella – positive titer, 2 vaccines, or physician documented history; boosters required if low titer
- Hepatitis B – positive titer, proof of vaccine series, or declination accepted
- Tdap – highly preferred for Pediatric specialties, Labor and Delivery, Postpartum (declination accepted)
- Seasonal Flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 – 3/31)
- COVID vaccination series preferred but not required
Training and Facility-Specific Requirements
- Completion of multiple mandatory training modules with attestations, including but not limited to:
- Language Services Training
- CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
- Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
- Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module (except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, NICU)
- Stroke Education (except Pediatric specialties and NICU)
- CLABSI Prevention Training
- Preventing Pressure Injury Training
- Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
- Pyxis ES MedStation Training
- Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
- Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
- Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (except certain hospitals)
- Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health, Home Health)
- New Employee Orientation Module
- 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
- ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
- eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
- Chaperone Policy Training
- Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026)
Work History and References
- 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days required
- Verification of last 7 years of employment required (attestations not accepted)
- One supervisor reference within the past year required for Cardio Thoracic ICU/CTICU (charge nurse references not accepted)
- Skills checklist required within 12 months of start
Additional Notes
- Start dates available: June 26, July 10, or July 17 (latest)
- RTO (Return to Office) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval
- Parking cost approximately $125/month
