Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit (7th Floor Intermediate Care)

Location: South Bend, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 (3 shifts of 12 hours)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
Patient Ratio: 1:5


Job Description

  • Work on a true cardiac step-down unit requiring proficiency in telemetry and cardiac rhythm identification.
  • Must pass a telemetry rhythm identification quiz prior to starting.
  • Care for patients requiring cardiac and stroke care, including managing cardiac drips such as Heparin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and Lasix.
  • Exposure to renal patients with hemodialysis beds (HD performed by an outside company).
  • Manage all modes of oxygenation except mechanical ventilation.
  • Floating within scope to like or lesser acuity units may be required.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum 1 year of recent cardiac step-down experience.
  • Experience in telemetry and stroke care.
  • Current ACLS certification.
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Step-down unit experience.

Compliance & Screening Requirements

  • Background check covering the last 7 years in all states lived/worked; must be completed within 90 days of start.
  • Education verification or copy of diploma/transcripts required.
  • Physical exam required.
  • Negative 12-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, cannabinoids, MDMA, methamphetamines, buprenorphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, cocaine, methadone, tramadol, benzodiazepines, morphine/opiate).
  • TB screening: Negative 2-step PPD or Q-gold within 1 year; T-Spots not accepted. If positive PPD, must have chest x-ray within past 12 months.
  • Immunizations or titers required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
  • Flu vaccine required prior to start or approved medical/religious exemption; documentation must be on file by December 15.
  • COVID vaccine exemption allowed with proper medical or religious documentation.

Additional Information

  • Guaranteed 36 hours per week.
  • Parking: Free overnight parking in designated associate areas; $9/day for day shift garage parking.
  • Charting system: Cerner.
  • Scrub color: Royal Blue or White.
  • Candidates must review and sign facility-specific confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements.
  • Completion of facility-required online modules (approx. 8-10 hours) prior to start is mandatory; modules are due by the Friday before start date.
  • On-site EKG exam required to demonstrate cardiac rhythm knowledge.

Notes

  • Local candidates within 50 miles are not accepted.
  • Floating may be required to similar or lower acuity units.
  • Prior travel experience is not required.
