Job Summary

This is a challenging, fast-paced Labor and Delivery nursing position on a high-volume unit with over 300 births per month. Double labor assignments are common daily. The unit cares for obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater, including high-risk antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care, as well as some patients under 16 weeks on the high-risk maternity unit. The unit includes obstetrical triage and performs scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean births and rescue cervical cerclage.

Work Details

• Shift: 12-hour day shifts (06:45 AM - 7:15 PM)
• Ratios: 2:1 nurse-to-patient ratio
• Patient Volume: Average 20 births in 24 hours, 30-40 admits, 40 visits/day, 20 rooms
• Float Requirement: Float as needed on a special maternity care high-risk OB unit
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend, minimum 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
• Orientation: 24 hours
• Scrubs: Provided (blue)

Required Experience & Skills

• Specialty: Registered Nurse – Labor and Delivery
• Minimum Years of Experience: 2 years preferred; 3 years preferred for comfort on this difficult unit
• Traveler Experience: First-time travelers accepted if experienced in large/high-volume similar settings
• Skills:

  • Circulate in OR
  • Sterile vaginal exams
  • Competent in immediate newborn care

Required Certifications

• BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
• AWHONN Intermediate (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses)
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Patient Diagnoses & Procedures

• Obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater (intrapartum, high-risk antepartum, postpartum)
• High-risk antepartum patients under 16 weeks
• Obstetrical triage for screening and outpatient procedures (antenatal fetal surveillance, IV hydration, medication administration)
• Scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean births
• Rescue cervical cerclage

Unit Environment

• Very fast-paced and higher acuity than typical labor and delivery units
• Double labor assignments are daily occurrences
• Strong preference for RNs with OR circulate experience

Compliance & Background Requirements

• Background checks including local, federal, national criminal databases, sex offender search, and education verification
• Drug testing within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required)
• Physical exam within 1 year of start (updated annually if past positive TB)
• Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training (not required for non-clinical)
• Immunizations and titers required: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination), Flu vaccine or approved exemption
• TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; chest x-ray if positive
• Flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 10/31)
• Various state-specific registry and exclusion list checks within 90 days prior to start

Additional Requirements

• Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable
• Color blindness testing within 1 year
• Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (specific to certain RN specialties; not required for Labor and Delivery)
• Completion of facility-specific orientation and compliance training modules (may take 8-10 hours)
• Badge photo submission required prior to start (passport style, white background, business attire)
• Confidentiality agreement and hospital policies acknowledgment required

Notes

• No call requirement
• RTO (Return to Office) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs may lead to cancellation
• Contract lengths accepted: 13 to 26 weeks
• Due to the fast-paced nature, 48-hour contracts are less preferred

Summary

This Labor and Delivery travel nursing position is ideal for experienced RNs comfortable in a high-volume, high-acuity maternity unit with strong skills in labor support, newborn care, and OR circulation. The role requires flexibility to float within the unit, weekend availability, and adherence to strict compliance and credentialing standards. First-time travelers with relevant experience are welcome.

Requirements/Qualifications

• Valid RN license in North Carolina
• Labor and Delivery experience of at least 2 years, including experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• BCLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• AWHONN Intermediate certification
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
• Experience circulating in the Operating Room (OR)
