Travel Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical
Location: Newnan, Georgia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 12 weeks
Unit Details
- Patient diagnoses include general medical surgical cases and peritoneal dialysis.
- Weekend schedule: Every other weekend.
- No on-call required.
- Floating within facility and scope of practice as needed.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Georgia.
- Minimum of 1 year of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with recent experience within the last year.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
Required Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Registered Nurse license for the state of Georgia (must be verified within 30 days prior to start).
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification (AHA or ARC accepted).
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) required for certain specialties; verify if required for this assignment.
- Other certifications (PALS, NRP, EFM, NIH Stroke) may be required depending on specialty area—confirm based on unit specifics.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check completed within 30 days prior to start, including national and county criminal searches, sex offender registry, and education verification.
- Education verification required; official transcripts or diplomas acceptable if degree verification is pending.
- Physical exam statement within 12 months of start (not required annually).
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 12 months; if previously positive, additional documentation required.
- Annual TB questionnaire required regardless of TB status.
- Immunizations/vaccinations required or documentation of immunity:
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) – 2 vaccines or positive titer with boosters if needed.
- Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer with boosters if needed.
- Hepatitis B surface antibody titer or signed declination.
- Tdap (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis) highly recommended but not mandatory.
- Seasonal flu vaccine or signed declination required during flu season (Nov 1 – Mar 31).
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 60 days of start (includes amphetamines, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, cocaine, opiates, methadone, PCP, propoxyphene, THC).
- Skills checklist updated within the last 12 months.
- Verification of most recent work history required; can be pending at start with proof it is in process.
- Two clinical references required.
Competency Exams (Aya Requirements)
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required for RNs.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for Telemetry, ICU, ER, and related specialties; three attempts allowed, failure on third attempt results in cancellation.
- Color blindness test required; alternative assessment available if needed.
- General competency exam required for nursing staff.
Scheduling & Holidays
- Orientation time off (RTO) maximum of 7 days; must be compliant to start on time or assignment start may be delayed by 2 weeks.
- If one major holiday falls during assignment, traveler is expected to work it. If two holidays fall, traveler must work both. If three holidays fall, traveler must work two.
- Major holidays include Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving/Black Friday, Christmas Eve/Day, New Year’s Eve/Day.
Additional Notes
- Non-billable orientation hours vary by contract length (e.g., 8 hours for 8-week assignment).
- Locals accepted at the same rate.
- Candidate must review and sign facility-specific Code of Conduct and Dress/Professional Appearance policies prior to start.
- Floating assignments are within the facility and scope of practice.
This position offers an opportunity to work night shifts in a medical surgical unit with a variety of patient diagnoses, including peritoneal dialysis, in a supportive travel nurse environment that accepts first-time travelers.
