Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg 5 South (Hem/Onc)
Location: Jackson, Mississippi
Unit: 5 South Hematology Oncology (32 beds)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Specialty: Medical-Surgical Nursing with Hematology/Oncology focus
- Experience Required:
- Minimum 1 year of specialty experience preferred (level 1 trauma experience required)
- Experience at a larger facility with high acuity patients and surgeries preferred
- Comfort with lines, chest tubes, hematology/oncology, and chemotherapy preferred
- Certifications Required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) mandatory
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) required for charge RNs
- Prior Travel Experience: Not specified / not required
Clinical Responsibilities & Skills
- Administer chemotherapy (training provided by manager; ONC certification not required)
- Manage patient care with typical nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:5 to 1:6, adjusted for acuity
- Titrate drips such as heparin; amiodarone may be started before transfer to cardiac unit
- Monitor patients using tele monitoring systems; RNs collaborate with central monitor stations
- Float between MedSurg units as needed, with higher acuity patients assigned to core staff
- Work with respiratory therapy support for CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow oxygen as needed
Work Schedule & Environment
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm or 7pm-7am)
- Scheduling: Block scheduling possible; travelers expected to fill schedule gaps
- Weekend Requirement: Typically every other weekend or 2 weekends per month; may vary
- Holiday Requirement: Rotate with regular staff
- Call/Standby: None required
- Dress Code: Solid color professional scrubs (any color)
Orientation & Onboarding
- First day includes paperwork, attestations, and system logins (Omnicell, Epic)
- Unit tour and scheduling discussion
- Two additional 12-hour night shifts with a preceptor for orientation
Additional Requirements
- Flu Vaccine: Required by November 15 (medical exemptions allowed with documentation)
- Fingerprinting: Required; remote process takes 10 days or in-person at designated campuses prior to start
- EPIC Charting Proficiency: Required
- Travel Radius: Must be willing to work within a 50-mile radius of the facility
Unit Culture & Support
- Charge nurses take light patient assignments and can take full load if needed
- Nurse managers available weekdays; house supervisors cover evenings and weekends
- Educators and managers support staff development; smaller units share resources
