Position Details

  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) — may be waived if candidate has strong ER experience without TNCC
• EPIC Experience: Required

Department & Facility Information

• Department: Emergency Room (ER)
• Trauma Level: Stroke and STEMI receiving; Level 2 for adults and pediatrics
• Beds: 35 total beds with 2 trauma bays
• Fast Track: Yes, 8 beds
• Triage: Separate triage area using ESI triage algorithm; travelers can perform triage
• Psych/Seclusion Rooms: Yes, staffed by ER nurses
• Security: In-house 24/7 during highest volume times
• Average Patients per Day: 111
• Nurse to Patient Ratio: 1:4

Common Diagnoses & Patient Population

• Mix of trauma and medical cases including:

  • Gunshot wounds (GSW)
  • Violent crime injuries
  • Strokes and STEMI
  • Mental health cases
  • Pediatric respiratory illnesses and fractures
• Trauma patients managed if nurse has trauma background

Clinical Responsibilities

• Use of all critical care drips
• Monitoring and reading telemetry strips by ER nurses
• Blood draws and EKGs performed by nurses and techs
• Respiratory Therapy (RT) available 24/7 (respond to codes and respiratory tasks, but not housed in ER)
• X-Ray and CT located next door; nurse transports critical patients and after-hours patients

Staffing & Support

• ED Physicians and Mid-level providers present; up to 2 MDs and 3 midlevels during busiest times
• Charge Nurse/team lead available 24/7
• Support staff includes LPNs (nights), techs, and paramedics who assist with tech duties and IVs

Scheduling & Work Environment

• Multiple shift start times between 5 AM and 9 PM; shifts are 12 hours
• Weekend and holiday work required every other week
• No call or standby requirements
• No floating requirements
• Orientation: One 12-hour shift specific to unit/department
• Scrub color: Caribbean Blue

This position is ideal for ER nurses with solid recent experience, required certifications, EPIC proficiency, and prior travel experience looking for a 13-week contract in Illinois.
