Registered Nurse – Oncology Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- 19 private beds
- Patient population includes all types of cancer (commonly lymphoma and leukemia), hematology, radiation oncology, and gynecologic oncology patients
- Staffing ratios:
- Days: typically 1:5 (can vary 1:4-5)
- Nights: typically 1:6 (can vary 1:5-6)
- 1:1 staffing for specific medications/therapies as needed
- Charge Nurse present 24/7, generally does not take patient assignments
- House supervisor available 24/7
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) support the unit:
- 3 PCTs from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM
- 2 PCTs from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM
- Telemetry monitors (Phillips brand) used; RNs are not required to interpret strips
- Respiratory therapy manages BiPAP and CPAP; RNs assist with CPAP only if part of patient’s home regimen
Schedule & Shifts
- 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
- Night shift available (36 hours/week)
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri/Sat)
- Holiday requirement: every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Self-scheduling with coordination for time-off requests
- Floating required as part of unit rotation; float shifts are 4+ hours and assigned fairly
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or proof of application in process
- BLS (AHA) certification
- ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate
- Experience administering IV chemotherapy and immunotherapy, including handling precautions (PPE) and monitoring for side effects
- Experience with chemotherapy regimens and set-rate drips (e.g., heparin, 24-hour methotrexate bags)
- No requirement for RNs to titrate drips; medication adjustments require physician orders
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation: 24-36 hours
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
