Job Summary
The Anesthesia Technician provides comprehensive support to anesthesia providers in the operating room and other clinical areas. Responsibilities include preoperative preparation, intraoperative support, postoperative duties, emergency response, and maintenance of anesthesia equipment and supplies to ensure safe and efficient patient care.
Primary Responsibilities
Preoperative Duties:
- Prepare and set up anesthesia equipment (ventilators, monitors, infusion pumps).
- Assemble and test anesthesia machines for proper function.
- Organize medications, IV solutions, and airway management tools.
- Restock anesthesia supply carts and transport equipment (oxygen masks, nasal cannulas, tanks, IV fluids).
- Ensure sterile and safety standards with routine quality control checks.
Intraoperative Support:
- Assist with patient positioning and airway management.
- Support intubation and extubation procedures.
- Monitor and troubleshoot anesthesia equipment during surgery.
- Assist with blood transfusions and medication administration.
- Manage specialized monitoring devices.
- Facilitate room turnovers by cleaning and restocking anesthesia workspaces and equipment.
Postoperative Duties:
- Clean, disinfect, and restock used anesthesia equipment.
- Assist with patient recovery and transfer.
- Dispose of biohazardous waste safely.
- Document equipment maintenance and malfunctions.
Emergency Response:
- Provide immediate assistance during emergencies (cardiac arrest, respiratory distress).
- Supply emergency equipment (crash carts, defibrillators).
- Support resuscitation efforts.
- Maintain readiness of emergency carts and supplies.
Monitoring Equipment Management:
- Set up and troubleshoot monitoring components (EKG, blood pressure monitors, pulse oximetry, capnography).
- Assist with invasive monitoring lines and transport monitors.
Anesthesia Gas Machine Management:
- Troubleshoot and maintain anesthesia gas machines and related systems.
- Perform daily quality control measures (self-checks, leak testing, valve inspection).
Sterile Field Preparation and Maintenance:
- Adhere to sterile techniques per AORN guidelines.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining sterile fields during procedures.
Intravenous Therapy Support:
- Prepare and manage blood and fluid warming setups.
- Assist with arterial and central line placements.
Stock and Supply Management:
- Maintain anesthesia supply levels across ORs and emergency carts.
- Restock various anesthesia carts (travel, pediatric, regional block, standard OR).
Mobile Case Support:
- Assist anesthesia providers in off-site cases (cardiac cath lab, MRI, interventional radiology, CT scan, ICU, labor & delivery).
Induction/Intubation Assistance:
- Prepare intubation equipment (ETTs, LMAs, laryngoscopes, video laryngoscopes).
- Assist with difficult airway cases and perform cricoid pressure when required.
Pediatric Anesthesia Support:
- Operate and maintain pediatric anesthesia equipment.
- Assist in pediatric IV placement, induction, and airway management.
General Responsibilities:
- Maintain compliance with safety protocols and regulatory standards.
- Stay updated on anesthesia technology and procedures.
- Train and mentor new anesthesia technicians and OR staff.
- Respond promptly to anesthesia personnel requests.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of experience as an Anesthesia Technician, including experience within the last year.
- Experience working with pediatric patients.
