NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Lees Summit, Missouri
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 18:45 - 7:15)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Details

  • Average Daily Census: 6.9
  • Unit Size: 18 rooms, 20 beds
  • Patient Population: Neonates ≥ 34 weeks gestation, Level 1 Nursery, NICU II & III

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Missouri
  • Minimum 2 years of NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA or AAP approved

Skills & Competencies Required

  • Attend high-risk deliveries
  • Neonatal care including dysrhythmia interpretation/management, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, telemetry monitoring on unit
  • Blood glucose monitoring, hyperbilirubinemia management, phototherapy
  • Breastfeeding support and handling of breast milk
  • Feeding methods: bottle, breast, gavage
  • Placement and management of oral/nasogastric/nasojejunal tubes
  • Isolation precautions and PPE use
  • Neonatal sepsis recognition and sepsis workup
  • Administration of blood and blood products
  • Arterial line management and central line care including blood draws
  • IV insertion and maintenance
  • Management of umbilical artery and vein catheters (UAC, UVC)
  • Medication administration including antibiotics, antivirals, anti-seizure meds, steroids, surfactants
  • Neonatal dosage calculations
  • Assist with lumbar puncture
  • Care for neonatal abstinence syndrome
  • APGAR scoring and developmental care
  • Patient and family teaching
  • Phlebotomy and thermoregulation
  • Respiratory support: Bubble CPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), chest tube management, oxygen delivery systems, suctioning (ETT, NT), ventilator management (AC/PC/SIMV/CPAP/BIPAP/PEEP)
  • Arterial and venous puncture blood gas collection
  • Management of meconium aspiration and respiratory distress syndrome

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID (Driver’s License or State ID) required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches, education verification, and other state-specific checks as applicable
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required quarterly
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start
  • Professional license primary source verification required (Missouri RN license verifiable via NURSYS)
  • Unit-specific competency exams including dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (minimum 80% pass rate)
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required
  • Color blindness testing within 12 months of start
  • Skills checklist specific to unit required within 1 year of start
  • Employment application and professional references (2 required, supervisors preferred)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, including comprehensive drug panel, must remain valid throughout assignment
  • Annual fit mask (N95) testing required
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination (expires every 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 12 months (2-step PPD or equivalent)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: positive titer, vaccination, or medical exemption required; no exemptions allowed for NICU or newborn nursery staff
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Sept 30 - Apr 1)
  • Annual regulatory compliance education and HIPAA acknowledgement required
  • Facility-specific policies to review and sign prior to start: hand hygiene, fingernail, dress code, confidentiality, latex allergy questionnaire
  • Badge photo required (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months of start)

Additional Notes

  • Scrub color: Navy blue (provided only for charge nurses and transition/baby catcher nurse roles)
  • Charting system: EPIC
  • Return to work restrictions: No more than 7 days off allowed
  • Guaranteed minimum hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks (cancelled shifts must be full shift length)

This position is ideal for experienced NICU RNs comfortable with high-acuity neonatal care, weekend and night shifts, and flexible floating within neonatal and labor/delivery units. First-time travelers are not accepted.
