Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Durham, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years in specialty (PCICU experience strongly preferred; NICU, Pediatric Stepdown, and Pediatric RNs also considered)
  • Licensure: North Carolina or Compact nursing license required and must be in hand
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Floating: Yes
  • Orientation: Bi-weekly
  • Flu Vaccine: Required with no exemptions or declinations accepted
  • Local candidates within 75 miles considered

Key Requirements

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
  • Must have current NC or Compact RN license
  • Must have minimum 2 years of nursing experience in relevant specialty areas (PCICU preferred)
  • Required certifications: BLS and PALS (AHA approved)
  • Must be willing to work every other weekend and float as needed
  • Flu vaccination is mandatory for all candidates

Compliance and Documentation

  • Background checks must be completed within 90 days of start date, including SSN trace, county searches, sex offender, and education verification as applicable
  • Drug testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (instant tests not accepted)
  • Physical exam required within 12 months of start
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Flu vaccine (seasonal, no exemptions)
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (every 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (vaccines or positive titers required, no exemptions)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
    • Polio vaccine or attestation
  • Two professional references required from employment within the last 12 months, at least one must be a supervisor
  • Skills checklist and employment application must be current and complete

Orientation and Onboarding

  • Orientation sessions held bi-weekly
  • Candidates must set up a Duke Guest Account prior to clearance to access orientation and work systems
  • Online modules must be completed prior to orientation
  • Competency exams and pass/fail testing (EKG/medication knowledge) required at orientation
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training provided during orientation for applicable units

Additional Notes

  • Candidates with less than a 30-day gap between previous Duke assignments may have some documentation requirements waived or accepted on file
  • Candidates must comply with all facility-specific onboarding and competency requirements within specified timeframes
  • Floating and weekend work are mandatory components of this role
