Registered Nurse (ER) - Travel/Contract

Location: Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Facility & Unit Details

  • Hospital ER with 37 staffed beds
  • Level III trauma center, Stroke and STEMI certified
  • Combined adult/pediatric ER
  • May float to a free-standing 14-bed ER (8 miles away, 5–10 minute drive)
  • No mid-shift floating

Experience & Schedule

  • Minimum 2 years of ER experience required
  • Every 3rd weekend required

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (American Heart Association)
  • BCLS/BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course)
  • EPIC experience required

Licensure & Verification

  • State nursing license primary source verification within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required (when applicable)
  • Education verification through school or National Student Clearinghouse
  • Diploma or official transcript required

Compliance & Background Checks

  • 7-year county background checks, national federal, USA criminal search (if lived outside IA in last 7 years)
  • Social Security Trace
  • FACIS III, OFAC, OIG/EPLS, National Sex Offender Search, SAM
  • Background checks must be within 30 days of assignment start
  • Iowa SING check required, must be run through Iowa State SING website (not Sterling)
  • Two supervisory references required (one within last year, second within last 2 years)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • COVID and Flu vaccination required; exemptions accepted with proper documentation and approval
  • Annual physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific 3M N95 mask sizes required)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination or declination
  • Negative TB test (QuantiFERON gold or TSpot within 90 days) or chest x-ray if positive
  • Annual TB questionnaire if positive
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) - positive titer or 2 live vaccines required
  • Hepatitis B vaccination series or positive titer or declination
  • Varicella - positive titer or 2 live vaccines required
  • 10-panel drug screen including THC within 30 days of start
  • Flu seasonal vaccination or approved exemption by October 31 annually

Competency Exams & Training

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (80% pass rate)
  • Unit-specific competency exams (80% pass rate)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam for ER (80% pass rate)
  • Core competency exams (Parts I, II, III) updated annually with 80% pass rate
  • Color blind testing (HRR-Ishihara test)
  • HIPAA orientation and safety manual acknowledgment (annual)
  • Mandatory Reporter training for Child and Adult Abuse through Iowa HHS website

Additional Notes

  • Candidate must sign Mercy Medical Center - Iowa SING Memorandum of Understanding
  • Online modules temporarily completed onsite as of 7/17/2024
  • Caribbean Blue Scrubs provided or required

This position is ideal for experienced ER Registered Nurses comfortable with trauma and pediatric care, who meet strict certification, licensure, and compliance requirements, and are willing to work every third weekend with occasional floating to a nearby ER.
