Registered Nurse (RN) - Cardiovascular Med/Surg Telemetry

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: 3W Cardiovascular Med/Surg Telemetry
  • Shift: 3x12 or 4x12 hour night shifts (7pm-7am), weekdays, every other weekend required
  • Orientation/Start Date: Held every other week on Thursday
  • Patient Ratio: 1:7 (Team Nursing Approach)
  • Unit Size: 38 beds, medical patients with emphasis on cardiovascular disease
  • Team Composition: 1 RN, 1 LPN, 1 Nursing Assistant per 7-8 patients
  • Float: May be floated as needed
  • Schedule: Blocked schedule requests considered (discuss during interview)
  • Guaranteed Hours: Option for 36 or 48 hours/week (discuss during interview)
  • No call requirement
  • Holiday RTO: Limit requests to no more than 1 of the 3 major holidays
  • Radius Rule: 100-mile radius; 75-99 miles requires facility approval

Experience & Licensure

  • Minimum Experience: 2 years required
  • First-time travelers accepted if experience requirements met
  • Licensure: West Virginia or Compact RN license required (pending license acceptable)

Required Certifications

  • BLS (AHA only, no pending or onsite completion allowed)
  • ACLS (AHA only, required for this unit)
  • Telemetry skills including:
    • Interpretation of dysrhythmias
    • Management of dysrhythmias

Skills & Competencies

  • Telemetry experience required
  • Must complete annual skills checklist for specialty (MS/Tele skills checklist required)
  • Pass/fail testing required for nursing candidates:
    • EKG exam
    • Medication calculation exam
    • Blood administration test

Orientation & Training

  • Orientation is 2 days (Thursday and Friday)
  • Includes Cerner Infusion Management training
  • Must complete required inservice training modules prior to start (approx. 4 hours)
  • Review of facility-specific policies including blood administration, dress code, math calculation packet, and EKG review required before start
  • Fit mask testing required annually (3M N95 1860 Small or Regular and Aura 9205 only)
  • PAPR accommodations available if fit testing cannot be passed

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, stating candidate is in good health and free from communicable diseases
  • Negative TB test within 3 months of start or negative chest X-ray if positive TB history
  • Annual TB questionnaire for positive TB responders
  • Required vaccinations or proof of immunity:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (no declinations accepted; medical/religious exemptions require approval)
    • Rubeola (Measles) - 2 vaccines or positive titer
    • Mumps - 2 vaccines or positive titer
    • Rubella - 2 vaccines or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B (series or positive titer; declination allowed if series completed)
    • Varicella - 2 vaccines or positive titer
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccine required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31); medical/religious exemptions require approval
  • COVID-19 vaccine not required (proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted)
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel (no placeholders or pending results accepted)

Background & Documentation Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start (includes SSN trace, county, sex offender, national, and international searches if applicable)
  • EPLS/SAM, OIG, and National Sex Offender Registry checks within 30 days of start and updated annually (must be completed independently)
  • Valid Driver’s License required
  • Social Security Card required (legible)
  • Residency Declaration Form if working on a compact license (driver’s license must match compact state)
  • Primary source verification of state license and NURSYS verification within 30 days of start
  • Minimum 1 reference from manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within 1 year of start
  • Candidate profile, specialty skills checklist, and minimum 2 manager/charge references required

Additional Notes

  • Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked at this system
  • Scrub color: Royal Blue/White for RNs
  • Charting system: Cerner, SBAR, Accudose
  • Free parking for travelers
