Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Medical Oncology
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Summary
- Position involves working in a medical oncology unit caring for adult and geriatric patients.
- Oncology experience is preferred but not required.
- Staffing ratios aim for 1:4, occasionally 1:5.
- Weekend shifts vary based on unit needs.
- No set/blocked scheduling; shift assignments rotate every 4 weeks.
- Orientation includes one week of day shift classroom training followed by 36 hours of on-unit precepted orientation.
- Shift schedule may include 12-hour day or night shifts on a rotating basis.
Patient Population & Diagnoses
- Adults and geriatrics.
- Common diagnoses include:
- Breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, colon, and esophageal cancers.
- Patients receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy.
- Unit cares for all solid tumor cancers across the cancer journey, including end-of-life care.
- Focus on infection prevention and patient fall prevention.
- Patients may have medical-surgical issues in addition to oncology care.
Required Experience & Skills
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
- Telemetry interpretation and monitoring skills required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
Certifications & Licenses
- Required:
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Preferred:
- Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy certification.
- Additional certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., ACLS, PALS) — verify per unit specifics.
Orientation & Training
- First week: Monday to Friday, day shift orientation.
- Second week: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
- Unit-specific competency exams required.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually.
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required prior to start.
Technology
- Electronic charting using EPIC system.
Floating & Scheduling
- Floating to other medical-surgical oncology units may be required.
- Self-scheduling requests are submitted and balanced by the department.
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check required within 90 days of start, including FBI and state fingerprinting.
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program required.
- Drug screening (10-panel) required within 3 months of start.
- Various health documents required, including:
- Physical exam within 1 year.
- Immunizations and titers (Tdap, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B).
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season.
- Annual acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies.
- Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
References & Documentation
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leader.
- Employment application and skills checklist required.
Additional Notes
- Candidates must comply with fingerprinting and background check processes specific to Ohio.
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required annually.
- Candidates should be prepared for variable weekend shifts and rotating 12-hour shifts.
- Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
