Location: Bridgeport, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Unit/Department: MedSurg/Tele Float Pool (floats primarily to MedSurg and Telemetry units)

Unit Details

  • Float pool covers multiple units:

    • Others: 4N (36 beds), 5S (36 beds), 6S (36 beds), Critical Care (20 beds)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: Generally 1:5-6, occasionally up to 1:7 depending on acuity
  • Telemetry monitors used (Phillips); RNs must be able to read and interpret cardiac strips
  • Respiratory equipment on unit: CPAP & BiPAP (managed by RTs, nurses not expected to manage vents or trachs)
  • CNAs are used on all units

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license for West Virginia
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • Must pass a cardiac rhythm exam (expected to be manageable for RNs with ACLS)
  • Experience:
    • Specialty: MedSurg/Telemetry nursing experience required (years of experience not explicitly stated, assume minimum 1+ year typical for float pool roles)
    • Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required
  • No drip titration required on these units

Work Schedule & Requirements

  • Shifts: 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday for both day and night shifts)
  • Holiday requirement: Work holidays as part of rotation with permanent staff
  • Float pool nurses report to clinical coordinator before shift for unit assignment
  • Orientation: 1-2 shifts with a preceptor on the unit

Additional Information

  • Dress code: Royal blue scrubs for RNs
  • Float pool nurses typically assigned a "parent unit" and care for basic telemetry patients within scope of practice
  • Charge nurse available 24/7; day charge nurse does not take patients, night charge nurse does
  • No call or standby requirements mentioned

This position is ideal for RNs with MedSurg and Telemetry experience who are comfortable floating between units and interpreting cardiac rhythms, but who do not need to titrate drips.

Pros

Hospital is relatively new, beautiful facility. Onboarding lady at facility is very nice.

Cons

The unit I was on was not very traveler friendly at all. Management unrealistic and everyone seemed to be part of the "mean girls" club. I can't recommend working for any WVU medicine facility. Not traveler friendly at all.
