Registered Nurse – Adult Cardiac Intermediate Unit
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- 20 beds, all private and monitored
- Patient population includes stepdown patients from ICU, TAVRs, ablations, Watchmen procedure, Micra, mitral clips, heart failure, trached and ventilated patients, COVID overflow
- Equipment used: Swan Ganz catheters, external pacemakers, PICC lines, midlines, central venous catheters (CVC), arterial lines (radial and femoral), temporary pacemakers, intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABPs)
- Ventilator support includes ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, heated high flow; vented patients are trached
- Telemetry monitoring with Philips systems; RNs expected to read and interpret strips
Schedule & Staffing
- 12-hour shifts (7a-7p or 7p-7a)
- Weekend requirement: every 2nd to 3rd weekend (days: Sat-Sun; nights: Fri-Sat)
- Holiday requirement: every other holiday
- No call or standby required
- Charge nurses and house supervisors present 24/7; charge nurses may take assignments
- Patient care techs available with ratios ranging from 1:12 to 1:15 or higher depending on staffing
- Floating required to all levels of care, including ICU
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or application in process
- Minimum 2 years of solid CVICU or Cardiac ICU experience (higher experience preferred)
- BLS certification required
- ACLS preferred; CCRN or PCCN certification a plus
- Must be proficient with cardiovascular ICU equipment and patient care (except immediate post-op, VAD, and transplant which are a bonus)
- Ability to titrate multiple drips including dopamine, dobutamine, levophed, epinephrine, norepinephrine, vasopressin, cleviprex, propofol, fentanyl, versed, insulin, heparin, esmolol, etc.
- Strong assessment, critical thinking, communication, organization, teamwork, compassion, time management, and ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
- Must be able to interpret cardiac telemetry strips independently
- Must be able to float to ICU and manage complex cardiac patients without additional training
Orientation & Other Notes
- Unit-specific orientation: 1 day unit orientation + 2 days preceptorship
- Dress code: Appropriate, clean scrubs (no specific color required)
- Drug-free workplace with mandatory negative drug screen
- Local placements accepted within 50-mile radius
