- Hours per Week: 36
- Unit Beds: 63 total (49 private, 9 observation)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 4-5 patients per RN
- Nights: 5-6 patients per RN
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday Requirement: Rotate every other holiday
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating: Travelers float first, only to units matching their experience level; ICU RNs floating to general units take a team of 3 patients
- Dress Code: Any scrub color allowed; scrubs provided
- Orientation: 2 shifts with preceptor plus one 12-hour shift for EPIC, professional orientation, and unit educator
Patient Population & Care
- Common Diagnoses/Patient Types: Post-op surgical, trauma, overflow medical
- Common Nursing Tasks: Dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, TPN
- Post-op care experience required
- Critical thinking and good bedside manner essential
- Team player attitude expected
- RNs do not titrate drips except for Heparin (only)
- Charge Nurses: 2 per shift, do not take patient assignments
- House Supervisor: Available 24/7
- Patient Care Techs (PCTs):
- Day: 7-10 patients per PCT
- Night: 10-15 patients per PCT
- PCT duties include vitals, accu checks, ADLs, turning, and ambulation
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment: No ventilators; CPAP and high flow oxygen present
- RNs manage inhalers and place patients on CPAP; RT manages nebulizers
- Telemetry: Some patients on telemetry with Phillips monitors
- RNs do not read strips; monitor techs handle this at a central station
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has been initiated
- BLS (AHA) certification required
Additional Requirements & Notes
- Must produce a negative drug screen for all panels (drug-free campus)
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Orientation hours: 12 non-billable hours
- Call off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty
- Travelers do not self-schedule; block scheduling considered with prior approval
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
- BLS certification
- Experience in post-op surgical acute care with critical thinking skills
- Ability to work night shifts and meet weekend/holiday rotation requirements
