Registered Nurse – Cardio Thoracic Unit
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
Shift: 12-hour shifts, Days (07:00–19:30)
Hours per Week: 48
Unit Overview
- 70 beds in the Cardio Thoracic Unit
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Days: 1:4–5
- Nights: 1:5–6
- Patient types include MI, CHF, A fib, COPD, pacemaker/AICD placement, lung surgeries (e.g., esophagectomy, chest tubes), and general medical overflow
- Respiratory equipment includes CPAP, BiPAP (used if part of patient’s home regimen), and heated high flow in special COVID cases
- Telemetry monitors by Phillips; nurses must read and interpret strips (monitor techs available)
- Charge nurse present 24/7, rarely takes patient assignments
- House supervisor available 24/7
- Patient care technicians (PCTs) support nursing with ratios:
- Days: 1:8–9
- Evenings: 1:9–10
- Nights: 1:10–12
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has started
- BLS certification (AHA) required; ACLS recommended
- Experience with EKG interpretation and medication titration (including Cardizem and heparin drips)
- Basic nursing skills and ability to titrate drips
- Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation: Typically 1 shift or part of one; may vary if previously worked at the facility
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Days: Saturday and Sunday
- Nights: Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday
- Holiday rotation required for major holidays (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day and eves for night shifts)
- No current call or standby requirement
- Floating to other general medical units required
Additional Information
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Drug-free campus; negative drug screen required for all panels
- Dress code: Any scrub color allowed except children/cartoon prints (adult unit)
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours (guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation)
- Call-off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or pay requirement
Summary
This is a 6-month contract for an experienced RN with strong cardiac and thoracic nursing skills, including telemetry interpretation and drip titration, working 12-hour day shifts in a 70-bed cardio thoracic unit. The role requires flexibility for weekend and holiday rotations, floating to other units, and adherence to a drug-free workplace policy.
