Registered Nurse (MedSurg 4W) - Phoenix, Arizona
Position Overview
- Unit: MedSurg 4W, 22 private rooms
- Shift: Days, 12-hour shifts
- Hours per week: 36
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-5
- Schedule: Self-scheduling, 4 weeks at a time
- Weekend requirement: 3 weekend days per pay period (Saturday/Sunday), same for travelers
- Holiday coverage included in rotation
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: Required to float to other med/surg and telemetry units; travelers float first. ICU float ratio is 1:3.
- Scrubs: Navy blue
Patient Population & Care
- Common diagnoses: Post-op, sepsis, pneumonia, COPD, diabetes, infections
- No telemetry on this unit, but telemetry experience preferred due to floating
- Respiratory therapists assigned to unit; nurses not expected to manage respiratory equipment directly
- Drip titration: Heparin only; no cardiac gtts titrated by RNs
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts with a preceptor
- SIMs Lab required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (pass/fail)
- Exceptions: Some units have modified requirements (e.g., port-a-cath insertion instead of central line dressing)
- Additional training on lifts, restraints, and wound care (educational only)
- Passing sterile field maintenance is critical; failure in SIMs Lab can lead to termination
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Arizona
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum of 2 years Med Surg nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
- Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
- Current BLS certification
Additional Information
- No local rates; 50-mile radius rule applies based on driver's license address
- House supervisor available 24/7; charge nurse out of count; manager available Monday-Friday
- No patient care technicians (PCTs); resource RN used in addition to charge RN
- New unit with ongoing development; team-oriented environment with some floating expected
- Pass/fail exam on day 1 of orientation
