Job Details
- Specialty: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift Hours:
- Day Shift: 06:30 AM – 07:00 PM
- Night Shift: 06:30 PM – 07:00 AM
- Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: As needed to meet unit needs
- Floating: May float to MedSurg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care units
Unit Information
- Department: Stepdown Unit
- Number of Beds: 33
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5
- Patient Population: Young adults through geriatrics with conditions such as sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA, and complex multisystem failure
- Charge Nurse: Present on each shift and takes an assignment
- Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: CNAs available with a 1:10 ratio; availability fluctuates based on census
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment: BiPAP, Airvo
- Telemetry: Tele/Monitor techs present; RNs required to read and interpret cardiac strips
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs are required to titrate drips including:
- Heparin
- Amiodarone
- Cardizem
- Nitroglycerin
- IV antibiotics
- Insulin
- Maintenance doses of IV medications (non-titratable) also administered
Orientation & Training
- Orientation includes one week of classroom training followed by two 12-hour shifts on the floor
- RN skills exam during orientation (open book, must pass with 90% or higher to continue)
Requirements & Policies
- Experience: Minimum 1 year of unit experience required
- Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Driver’s License: Required at submission to verify candidate is within 50-mile radius
- Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
- Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply will result in contract termination
- Return to Office (RTO): Required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approvals
Work Environment & Culture
- Busy patient flow with simultaneous admissions, discharges, and shift changes within a 6-hour window
- Successful nurses demonstrate strong teamwork, a friendly and positive attitude, engagement in patient experience, commitment to bedside report, and hourly rounding
- Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs
