Position Details

• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2-3 for adults
• Shift Times:

  • 06:30 - 18:30 (day shift)
  • 18:30 - 06:30 (night shift)
• Scheduling:

  • Self-scheduling available for core staff and travelers
  • Block scheduling generally not approved except possibly weekends
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend
  • Holiday requirement: minimum of 2 holidays during contract

Patient Population & Care

• Common diagnoses include trauma, cardiac issues, overdose/substance abuse, adult sepsis, post-stent, pacemaker placement, stroke, vascular cases, renal failure, heart failure, respiratory distress
• RNs are required to titrate drips including cardiac drips, insulin, and sedation
• Respiratory therapy equipment ranges from nasal cannula to ventilators; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage advanced respiratory devices beyond that
• RNs must read, interpret, and document cardiac monitor strips (GE monitors) with tele tech oversight

Orientation & Requirements

• Orientation: 1 shift of unit/department-specific orientation
• Return to Orientation (RTO): Required upfront within 7 days or less of the 13-week contract; no additional RTO approved
• Exam: Pass/fail open book exam during orientation; must score 90% or higher to continue
• Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
• Driver’s license required to verify candidate is within 50 miles radius
• Fingernail policy: Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
• Scheduling restrictions: No blocked scheduling except possibly weekends; no duo scheduling or carpool sharing allowed
• Floating: Typically to PCU, occasionally MedSurg with typical ratios of 1:4 or 1:5

Additional Notes

• Nurse aides and healthcare support techs assist based on census and volume, including 1:1 sitters as needed
• Candidates may not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
