Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (MS/Tele) - Travel/Contract

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

This is an ED Holding Support position located in the float pool. The ED Holding unit cares for patients within the Emergency Department who are waiting for inpatient beds. Patient diagnoses include any adult medical/surgical conditions, with some PCU level patients. Nurses will float between MS/Tele, ED, and MedSurg areas as needed.


Required Qualifications

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (MS/Tele)
  • Minimum Years of Experience: 2 years
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • Skills:
    • MS/Telemetry nursing
    • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
    • Telemetry monitoring (on unit and remote)
    • Use of Rapid Response Teams
    • Colostomy care
    • Feeding tube care and management
    • Renal failure management
    • Blood product administration
    • Peripheral line care/management
    • Phlebotomy
    • PICC line management
    • Heparin and insulin administration
    • Isolation precautions
    • Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
    • CPAP/BiPAP and High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
    • Interpretation of ABGs
    • Non-invasive airway management
    • Oral suctioning
    • Oxygen delivery devices (nasal cannula, face masks, portable oxygen tanks)
    • Tracheostomy management
  • Additional Preferred Skills:
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
    • IV insulin protocols
    • Pre/Post hemodialysis management
    • Accessing ports and central line blood draws
    • Starting IVs
    • Care of CVA, neuro surgery, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury
    • Ortho trauma and total joint replacements
    • Wound care and wound vac management

Job Details

  • Shift: Days (36-hour shifts accepted)
  • Patient Ratios:
    • 1:7 for MS/Tele patients
    • 1:4 for PCU level patients
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Float Requirement: Must float between MS/Tele, ED, and MedSurg units as needed
  • RTO (Return to Office) Policy: Max 7 days; no RTO after booking allowed onsite
  • Orientation: 12 hours
  • Scrubs: Navy color required
  • Special Unit Info: EDIP is the inpatient holding area within the Emergency Department
  • Equipment: Standard cardiac monitors, IV pumps, and other monitoring systems
  • Systems Used: Pyxis, Epic, SBAR
  • Scheduling: Manager scheduled
  • Additional: Contract staff may be assigned to Storm/Hurricane Teams and may be required to work during catastrophic events or disasters

Required Testing & Competencies

  • Must pass EKG/Dysrhythmia competency exam with a minimum score of 82% (3 attempts allowed)
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Color Blind Testing within 1 year via Relias (required for clinical candidates)

Background & Health Requirements

  • Criminal background checks within 90 days for all locations lived in the last 7 years
  • Education verification for highest degree earned (RNs may start with pending verification if license is valid)
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (updated annually if past positive TB)
  • Fit mask testing (N95 or PAPR training) within 1 year prior to start
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol
  • Required immunizations or titers with no declinations accepted for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (facility-specific declination form required if titer negative/equivocal)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation modules (up to 8 hours) prior to start
  • Must complete Medication Safety training and submit certificate of completion
  • Must complete confidentiality agreement, tobacco-free campus acknowledgement, and hospital policies acknowledgment
  • Must provide a passport-style photo for badge creation prior to start
  • Must complete Corp ID process and log into I-Learn within 24 hours of receiving credentials
  • May be required to complete CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training if assigned to ER or Behavioral Health units

Additional Notes

  • Mixed unit with high acuity patients and high turnover rate; all candidates will be interviewed
  • Candidates must be prepared to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with diverse patient needs
  • Prior travel experience is NOT required for this position
