Job Opportunity: OR Tech / Surgical Tech

Job Description

• Position: Surgical Technician (Surg Tech)
• Patient Age Group: Adolescents and Adults
• Weekend Requirement: 1 weekend day (Saturday or Sunday) on-call plus 4 weekday calls over 6 weeks (may decrease as staffing improves)
• Floating: May float to Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)
• Scrubs Provided
• Orientation: Bi-weekly sessions
• Flu vaccines are mandatory; no exemptions or declinations accepted
• First-time travelers are welcome
• Local candidates within 75 miles considered

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of experience as a Surgical Tech
• Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) certification or equivalent (e.g., NBSTSA)
• Must have graduated from an accredited Surgical Technology program or completed an appropriate U.S. Military training program in Surgical Technology
• Flu vaccination required (no exemptions)

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Background checks including SSN trace, county checks for past 7 years, sex offender, international searches if applicable
• Drug screening: Negative 10-panel within 30 days of start (instant tests not accepted)
• Physical exam within 12 months of start
• Immunizations and health documents required:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (every 10 years)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccination or positive titer (no exemptions)
  • Hepatitis B vaccination/titer or declination
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titer
  • Seasonal flu vaccination (required for new candidates starting October through March)
  • Polio vaccine or signed attestation
• Two professional references from employment within the last 12 months (one must be a supervisor)
• Employment application and skills checklist (updated annually)
• Competency exam specific to unit required
• Duke Guest Account setup prior to clearance (for access to orientation and work systems)

Additional Information

• Candidates must complete all required online modules prior to orientation
• Pass/fail testing on basic tech knowledge during orientation (minimum 80% to pass)
• Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training provided during orientation (valid for 2 years)
• Color blind testing required only for phlebotomists (not applicable here)
• Candidate must comply with all facility-specific onboarding and competency requirements within 3 weeks of start date

Prior Travel Experience

• Not required; first-time travelers are accepted
