Registered Nurse (MedSurg/Telemetry Neuro)

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36


Unit Overview

  • Department: Medical-Surgical Neurology, 4th Floor North
  • Unit Size: 25 beds
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
  • Patient Types: MedSurg/Telemetry patients including strokes, stable neurological deficits, post-neurosurgery, joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbations, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, orthopedic trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, failure to thrive
  • Mechanical lifts available in every other room
  • Multicultural patient population including Spanish, Karen, Burmese speakers

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Manage MedSurg/Telemetry Neuro patients and MedSurg overflow
  • Titrate drips including heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine
  • Manage PCA pumps and other common titratable/set rate drips
  • Telemetry techs interpret strips; RNs should have tele awareness but are not required to read their own strips
  • Charge nurse present on each shift and takes an assignment
  • Nurse aides/patient care techs support the unit with ratios of 1:10-20

Scheduling & Work Requirements

  • Shifts: 0630-1900 and 1830-0700 (travelers assigned night shift)
  • Limited block scheduling available for travelers
  • Weekend: At least every other weekend, with possible additional weekend shifts based on unit needs and census
  • Holidays: 2-3 shifts required between Thanksgiving and New Year’s
  • Floating: Required to float to other MedSurg areas or units with MedSurg patients waiting for beds

Orientation & Training

  • Unit-specific orientation: 2 days
  • RN exam during orientation: Pass/fail open book exam with a required 90% score to continue employment

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Current RN license
  • BLS (American Heart Association)
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Additional Requirements & Policies

  • Must have a valid driver’s license at time of application
  • Candidates must live within a 50-mile radius of the facility
  • Candidates cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any affiliated facilities within the specified health system
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
  • No prior travel experience required but preferred
  • No license or background issues allowed
