Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) – Emergency Department

Location: Prescott Valley, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Evenings
Hours: 12 hours per day, 36 hours per week

Unit Overview

• Emergency Department with 24 beds, including 4 critical rooms and 1 trauma room (Level 4 trauma center).
• Treats approximately 80-110 patients per day.
• Separate triage area where travelers who demonstrate triage ability are allowed to triage.
• Mixed holding area within the ED.
• Two well-equipped psychiatric/seclusion rooms.
• 24/7 in-house security with one staff member in the ED and one roving campus-wide.
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • General ED: 1:4
  • ICU in ED: 1:2 or 1:1 depending on acuity

Required Certifications & Skills

• ACLS, PALS, TNCC certifications required.
• Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department nursing experience.
• Skills in conscious sedation, critical thinking, and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) management.

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Chest pain, abdominal pain, minor trauma, respiratory distress.

Team & Support Staff

• 24/7 physician coverage with 1 MD and 1-2 mid-level providers during peak hours.
• Charge nurse and house supervisor present 24/7; charge nurse generally does not take patient assignments.
• ED Techs support nursing with IV skills, phlebotomy, splinting, wound care, transport, and special procedures; ratio approximately 1:10-12.
• Paramedics staffed daily from 11:00 to 23:00 in intake area, able to administer 12 medications and discharge patients.
• Respiratory Therapists (RT) available hospital-wide; RT manages ventilators, BiPAP, CPAP, Vapotherm, and ABGs. RNs troubleshoot respiratory equipment and call RT for issues.
• RNs read their own telemetry strips; all beds have telemetry monitors.

Equipment & Procedures

• Portable X-ray and CT available in the ED; radiology department adjacent for patient transport.
• Both phlebotomy staff and RNs draw labs depending on the situation.

Scheduling & Work Requirements

• No self-scheduling; block scheduling allowed with a maximum of 4 consecutive shifts.
• Weekend coverage every other weekend (day shifts on Saturday/Sunday, night shifts Friday/Saturday).
• Holiday coverage required for some major holidays (July 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve/Day, New Year’s Eve/Day), negotiable.
• One on-call shift per 28-day schedule; day shift covers day call, mid and night shifts cover night call.
• Floating required between east and west ED units, generally prescheduled.

Orientation & Dress Code

• Hospital orientation: 2 days.
• Unit-specific orientation: one 12-hour shift with a mentor in each ED (east and west).
• Dress code: navy blue dignity scrubs.

Summary of Requirements

• License: Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Arizona.
• Experience: Minimum 2 years in Emergency Department nursing.
• Certifications: ACLS, PALS, TNCC.
• Prior travel experience: Not specified as required.
