Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU/Med Surg/Oncology
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (various start times including 7a-7p, 7a-3p, 3p-7p, 7p-11p, 11p-7a, 7p-7a)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Self-scheduling: Yes
Unit: PCU, Oncology, and MedSurg (27-28 beds)
Patient Population: Adults
Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- PCU: 1:4
- Med/Surg: 1:5 (Nights 1:5-6)
Nursing Assistant Support: Yes
Charge Nurse: Yes
Additional Unit Support: PT/OT, RN case manager, social work, educator, dietician
Job Description
- Care for patients in Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Oncology, and Med/Surg units with a focus on oncology and trauma diagnoses.
- Common patient diagnoses include oncology and trauma cases.
- Nurses will float within the same level of care to med/surg and PCU units.
- Orientation provided: 2 days.
- Common drips/medications include chemotherapy, heparin, cardizem, protonix.
- RNs may be required to titrate drips such as insulin and cardizem occasionally.
- Use of specialty equipment including ventilators, hemodynamic monitoring (CVP, A-line, Swan-Ganz, EV-1000), ICP monitoring (training provided).
- EMR system: EPIC.
- IV Pumps: Alaris.
- Specialty equipment: Lyko lifts and other lift equipment available.
- Scrubs color: Navy Blue.
- Patient care focus includes hourly rounding and culturally sensitive care for a diverse patient population.
- Emphasis on teamwork, positive attitude, and compassionate care.
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Oncology certification preferred but not required (e.g., ONS/ONCC).
- Must pass a skills exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90%.
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience required, including PCU and oncology experience preferred.
- First-time travel nurses are welcome (no prior travel experience required).
- Driver’s license required at submission to verify distance compliance.
Additional Information
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply may result in contract termination.
- Candidates must not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN within 50 miles of the facility or with certain affiliated health systems.
- Patient care involves a wide variety of cultural, religious, and economic backgrounds.
- The unit values nurses who demonstrate genuine care, teamwork, and a positive attitude.
