Registered Nurse - Labor & Delivery

Location: Salem, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks (Travel Assignment)
Unit: Labor & Delivery (L&D)
Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (36 hours/week)
Patient Ratio: 1:1 to 1:2
Unit Beds: 17 inpatient, 2 triage

Unit & Work Environment

• Unit staffing includes a secretary on dayshift only; no techs available
• Equipment used: Monica Novii, Ambulatory (Telemetry) Monitors, GE EFM
• Documentation systems: Meditech, Centricity
• Floating policy includes coverage for Mother-Baby and Postpartum units
• Scheduling includes 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
• Daily huddle starts at 6:45 AM
• Hospital provides scrubs; nurses may wear their own to the hospital and change on arrival/departure
• Willingness to block schedule available

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery nursing experience, including experience within the last year
• Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, AWHONN
• Experience in Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

Skills & Experience

• Labor and delivery experience essential
• Proficient in strip interpretation and knowledge of common OB medications
• Experience as circulator in Cesarean Section (C/S) and PACU recovery for spinal anesthesia
• Antepartum triage experience
• Knowledge of common obstetrical complications and treatments
• Ability to assist with epidural placement
• Teamwork approach to patient care

Advanced Skills / Procedures Performed

• External Cephalic Version (ECV)
• Cesarean Section (C/S)
• Vaginal deliveries
• Assistance with vacuum or forceps deliveries as needed
• Epidural placement assistance

Additional Skills

• IV insertion and lab draws
• Knowledge of JADA and BAKRI balloon devices
• Blood and nitrous administration
• Experience with vaginal exams and setting up delivery tables

Patient Experience

• Adherence to AIDET principles (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You)
• Emphasis on courtesy and respect in patient care
