Travel RN Opportunity – Med-Surg Unit

Location: Smyrna, Tennessee
Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical-Surgical / Ortho-Spine Unit
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Unit: Med-Surg with dedicated Ortho/Spine floor
  • Beds: 54 total; 11 beds on busy ortho/spine unit
  • Patient Ratios:
    • RN: 1:5-6
    • Patient Care Technicians (PCTs): 1:12-15
    • RN/LPN team typically totals 10 staff per hall
  • Staffing:
    • Unit secretaries available until 8 PM on weekdays
    • Techs and externs available
    • RN/LPN teams with floating at unit discretion
  • Patient Population:
    • Medical-surgical patients
    • Orthopedic and spine patients
    • Trauma patients (stable)
    • Psych medical hold patients

  • Alaris pumps
  • Remote telemetry
  • Continuous pulse oximetry
  • Specialty beds and transfer equipment
  • Wound vacs, chest tubes, NG and feeding tubes
  • New 12-Lead EKG machine (easy to use)
  • Bladder scanners
  • Teletracking system for bed placement
  • MobiLab, Patient Keeper, Inspire App, Wound Capture

Documentation System

  • Meditech

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • At least one weekend shift required within a 4-week period (can be split)
  • Blocked scheduling handled case-by-case
  • Flexible scheduling options

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical RN experience
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt
  • Strong assessment, prioritization, critical thinking, and time management skills
  • Punctual, organized, team player with positive attitude and effective communication
  • Self-starter

Certifications

  • BLS required
  • ACLS optional

Procedures Commonly Performed

  • General medical-surgical care
  • Post-catheterizations without intervention
  • Laparoscopic appendectomy and cholecystectomy
  • Thoracentesis and paracentesis
  • Special procedures performed by Interventional Radiology
  • Care for spine and joint patients
  • Stable trauma care
  • Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis
  • Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
