Registered Nurse - PCU

Location: Greenville, North Carolina
Employment Type: Long Term
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

Provide care for patients in the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with a focus on neurological and stroke-related conditions.
Patient population includes:
- Acute Stroke management (ischemic, hemorrhagic, subarachnoid hemorrhage)
- Post neuro-surgical management (craniotomy, ventriculostomy, complex neuro-spine cases)
- Seizure management (epilepsy, post-ictal, pseudo-seizures)
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Guillain-Barre Syndrome
- Other neurological conditions such as brain tumors, encephalopathy, laminectomies, transverse myelitis
Skills utilized:
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Lumbar puncture assistance
- Management of arterial lines, central lines, tracheotomy patients, lumbar drains
- IV starts, peripheral and arterial blood draws
- Administration and monitoring of intravenous drips (cardiac, insulin, heparin)
- Cardiac monitoring
Work schedule includes 3 out of 4 holidays and 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week schedule.
No blocked scheduling.
Ratio of 1 nurse to 4 or 5 patients depending on acuity.
Must read and interpret EKG strips; EKG exam required during orientation.
Use of EPIC electronic health record system.
Flu vaccination required.
Work within an 80-mile radius of the facility.
All requested time off (RTO) must be submitted prior to assignment confirmation.

Required Qualifications

Valid RN license in North Carolina
Minimum of 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Neuro experience
Ability to read and interpret EKG strips
Proficient in NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Experience assisting with lumbar punctures
Skilled in management of arterial lines, central lines, tracheotomy patients, and lumbar drains
Competent in performing arterial blood draws
