Job Overview
- First time travelers accepted; local candidates not accepted.
- Travelers expected to work every other weekend; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs.
- May be required to cover charge nurse responsibilities with training and resources provided.
- Must agree to the possibility of precepting and/or having students shadow during assignment.
- Floating to different levels of care (Med-Surg, PCU, ICU) may be required; refusal to float may result in contract termination.
- Staffing ratios typically 1:3-4.
- Unit acuity is almost ICU level, covering Surgical PCU with specialties including ENT, Thoracic, General Surgery, Urology, and Medical overflow.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with PCU experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Proficient in cardiac monitoring on unit
- Management of chest tubes and fresh tracheostomies
- Epidural management
- Management of non-titratable cardiac drips
- IV insulin protocols and titration of insulin drips
- Management of external BiPAP/CPAP
- Doppler flap checks
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy required).
- Background checks including criminal, sex offender, and federal exclusions within required timeframes.
- Education verification and official transcripts/diplomas as applicable.
- Physical exam completed within 12 months of start date.
- Fit mask test within 12 months of start date (specific respirators required).
- Immunizations and titers:
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted.
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required.
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap: Strongly recommended but not required.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start date.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
- TB testing (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) within 1 year of start date; chest x-ray and documentation required if positive.
- Color blind exam (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score.
Additional Information
- Candidates must complete facility-specific orientation, competency exams, and safety acknowledgments.
- Must complete mandatory training modules prior to orientation.
- References: Minimum 2 references from recent employment with appropriate supervisory titles required.
- Employment application must be current and explain any employment gaps of 30 days or more.
- Skills checklist required within 12 months of start and must be updated annually.
Notes
- Indiana RNs will not be allowed to work at the facility after 11/30/2024, except for Perioperative/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).
- Travelers must be willing to float and accept charge nurse duties as needed.
- This position involves high-acuity surgical PCU care with complex patient needs.
