NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Tucson, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Hours per week: 36
- Patient ratio: 1:3 in NICU; ICU float assignments are 1:1 or 1:2
- Float assignments to Pediatrics/PICU caring for infants 6 months or younger, including NICU overflow Level II patients
- No on-call required
- Busy, high-volume delivery hospital with neonatal transport team
- No local candidates within 75 miles accepted
- Orientation held twice monthly
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Arizona
- Minimum 2 years of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience, including experience within the last year
- Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
- Experience with Epic electronic medical record system
Certifications & Competencies
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA or American Red Cross
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – AHA or American Red Cross
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) – AWHONN or NCC accepted
- ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course) – required for Pediatric ER
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) or MAB (Management of Assaultive Behavior) certificate
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (passing score 80% or higher)
- HIPAA Competency (updated annually, passing score 80% or higher)
- Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication) required for certain units including Peds/PICU; passing score 80% or higher
Background & Health Requirements
- Background check must be completed and cleared prior to assignment start, including multi-county/state searches and federal exclusions (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG)
- Drug testing (12-panel) within 30 days of start, must be initiated within 72 hours of booking
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by physician, NP, or PA
- Fit testing for N95 mask within 1 year of start (PAPR allowed onsite)
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (full vaccine within 10 years; declinations allowed except for Pediatrics, PICU, Pediatric ER, Mom & Baby, Labor & Delivery units)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (proof of 2 vaccines or positive IgG titer; no declinations)
- Varicella (proof of 2 vaccines or positive IgG titer; no declinations)
- Hepatitis B (proof of 3 vaccines or positive titer; declinations allowed with signed form)
- Negative TB test (QuantiFERON Gold, Tspot, or PPD) within 3 months of start; if positive, chest x-ray and symptom questionnaire required
- Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (Oct 1 – Apr 30); medical or religious exemptions require facility-specific forms
Documentation & Compliance
- Current driver’s license or state ID with correct name and address
- Employment application with last 7 years of work history; gaps over 30 days must be explained
- Two professional references from employment within last 3 years, including one supervisory reference
- Skills checklist updated annually
- Facility-specific job description acknowledgment
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgment and RN orientation sign-off required
- Traveler welcome letter acknowledgment required prior to start
Additional Notes
- Floating to PICU involves care for infants 6 months or younger, often NICU overflow patients
- Floating to ICU involves 1:1 or 1:2 patient assignments
- Floating to Labor & Delivery or Mother-Baby units may include assessments, vitals, and labs on well newborns
- Historically, July through December is the busiest period with lower likelihood of floating
This position is ideal for experienced NICU RNs with prior travel assignments who are comfortable working in a high-acuity, fast-paced neonatal environment.
