Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Seattle, Washington
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work in a high-risk, high-volume Labor & Delivery (L&D) unit with approximately 500-600 deliveries per month.
- Float responsibilities include postpartum and antepartum care; may float to sister facilities providing Mother/Baby care.
- Patient population includes midwifery clients, private OBs, adult recovery services (substance recovery), and community care clinics.
- Must function as a Baby Nurse during delivery and provide newborn care until transfer to postpartum.
- Circulate in the operating rooms (4 ORs) during deliveries.
- Required to provide newborn care including eye care, Vitamin K injections (thighs), and newborn assessments.
- Experience with medications such as Heparin, Insulin, and Magnesium Sulfate is necessary.
- Use of EPIC electronic medical records and electronic fetal monitoring is required.
- Staffing follows AWHONN guidelines.
- Schedule is posted every 6 weeks and designed to meet unit needs, including working every other weekend and holidays as needed.
- Pre-approved time off is considered on a case-by-case basis.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Washington.
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
- Minimum 3 years of Labor and Delivery experience, including experience within the last year.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a high-acuity, high-pace environment.
- Experience working with high-risk patients.
- Certifications required:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification or equivalent training
Orientation
- No non-billable orientation hours required (0 hours NBO vs. standard 40 hours).
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID and Social Security Card (as applicable).
- Background check within 90 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years; must include SSN trace, death master index, sex offender registry, education verification, and other checks as applicable.
- Education verification required for nursing degree; international education requires diploma/transcript or CES report.
- Drug screening: 9-panel drug screen within 12 months of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by MD, NP, PA, or DO, indicating ability to work with or without accommodation.
- Immunizations and health documents:
- TDAP vaccine within 10 years (declination accepted)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months (annual updates required)
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer
- Hepatitis B vaccination or signed declination
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer
- Seasonal flu vaccine during flu season (declination accepted)
- COVID vaccination record preferred (declinations not required)
- Respiratory safety clearance required annually for respirator use.
- Fit mask testing required for travel candidates, updated annually.
Additional Requirements
- Must complete annual regulatory and specialty-specific training modules via assigned learning management system.
- Must acknowledge and comply with float policy (may be required to float to other nearby facilities).
- Must have completed skills checklist annually for applicable units.
- Must complete medication/pharmacology competency exams as applicable.
- Must complete electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) certification or equivalent training.
Notes
- First-time travel nurses are accepted.
- Candidates currently employed at other facilities within the same health system with less than a 30-day gap may have some background and drug screening requirements waived or extended.
- Candidates must be able to work in a fast-paced, high acuity environment and meet all hard stop clinical skill requirements.
- Pre-approved time off is limited and handled on a case-by-case basis.
This position is ideal for experienced Labor and Delivery RNs with strong high-risk and newborn care skills seeking a travel contract in a busy, high-acuity hospital setting.
