Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse – Neuro ICU

Location

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit & Shift Details

  • Unit: Neuro ICU
  • Shift: Night (4 shifts of 12 hours each, 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM)
  • Hours per week: 48
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Floating: May float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Block schedule: Not accommodated
  • On-call: Not required
  • Guaranteed hours: Yes

Patient Ratios

  • Average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2 (both day and night shifts)

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, with ICU experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Required Certifications

  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – AHA or ARC only
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA or ARC only

Licensure

  • Must hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license appropriate for Connecticut
  • Primary source license verification required within 30 days of start
  • If not holding CT or Compact license, must apply for CT license within 72 hours of assignment start and provide proof of application

Required Training & Competencies

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (must score 85%)
  • Color Blind Testing (must score 80% or higher; required for all candidates starting on/after 8/2/2024)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (required for all ICU units including Neuro ICU)
  • Language Services Training
  • CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
  • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module (except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, NICU)
  • Stroke Education Module (not required for pediatric specialties or NICU)
  • CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric Training
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Training Modules
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
  • Patient Bedside Rounding Module (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (not required for pediatric or some other campuses)
  • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health; annual update required)
  • New Employee Orientation Module (must be completed by end of first day)
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
  • ED Handbook (not applicable for Neuro ICU but required for ED/ER RNs)
  • eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
  • Chaperone Policy Training (required if gap of 6+ months between assignments or module updated)
  • Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026 and forward)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical Exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit Mask Test within 12 months of start; must be updated annually (3M N95 preferred)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation (TB questionnaire required annually)
  • Immunizations or positive titers for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (or declination within 1 year)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination highly preferred for pediatric specialties, labor and delivery, postpartum (not required)
  • 10 Panel Drug Screen within 12 months of start
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID vaccination series preferred but not required

Background & Employment History

  • 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months of start (including SSN trace, counties lived/worked, statewide, national sex offender, national criminal, federal extended)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • Education verification required; foreign equivalency reports required for internationally educated candidates
  • Employment application must include 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Work history verification for last 7 years required for all start dates on/after 8/2/2024
  • One supervisor reference within past year required for ICU specialties (charge nurse references not accepted)
  • Skills checklist required within 12 months of start
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain tech roles (not applicable for RN Neuro ICU)

Additional Notes

  • Neuro ICU experience is mandatory
  • RTO (Return to Office) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval
  • Facility uses Epic for charting
  • Parking cost is approximately $125/month (informational only)
  • Candidate must have photo ID matching legal name on first day
